Townes Van Zandt - If I Needed You

Weird but true - I had to get a tooth pulled today at a time that it was not expected. The dentist put this song on for some reason when the short procedure started. It was very much appreciated, great song.

That and Blue Sky.

I'll add Domino - Van Morrison. I love the vocals, bass, and horns on this one.

All great choices. I'd add Camile Saint-Saëns -- The Swan to that list as well. I almost wish I had never heard it so I could hear it again for the first time.

Using your framework:

Secular:
The Parting Glass
I think a Christian theme can be imparted to it as well. It’s a must sing-a-long at my wake if I have anything to say about it.

Ashoken Farewell

Religious:
Can’t argue with Oh, Holy Night in any language.

Tom Waits has written some of the most beautiful songs in modern history. Most just can’t get past the raspy voice.
