I told myself I would never fly AA again but I got roped in due to them having non stop service from Austin to Kansas City. We are going up there for an extended family event so the schedule isn't flexible and it was shorter notice than I would like. Anyway I booked the flights a couple weeks back and then today I get an email saying they have changed our flight times??? WTH is this about, I'm not a worldly traveler like some on here but I have probably taken over a hundred flights in the last 10 years and I have never had this happen prior to a flight. Our non stop up there is no longer NS and now includes a 2.5 hour layover in Dallas. Do I have any recourse? Should I look elsewhere again, if I find another carrier would I be on the hook for any fees to AA since they changed things and not me. Of note, only because I choose AA I decided to get the flight insurance for the first time ever, not sure if that would help my situation any. TIA for any guidance, and $@#& American Airlines.

You are free to tell AA to pound sand, get a refund, and rebook elsewhere.

Unless you pushed that little button and accepted the changes. If you did that then you are fricked.

Flight insurance would do nothing.

Unfortunately flights do change at times. Have you called to see if there are other possibilities?

I stopped flying American for all domestic flights & only fly American for overseas flights which I rarely take.

What dates are you doing austin-mci? Honestly surprised you've never had a schedule change before, you must book a lot of tickets last minute instead of months in advance.

Your options
1. If no more nonstops, pretty sure you're eligible for a full refund. Take your refund and rebook on another airline (probably southwest is the only other nonstop)
2. Work with them on rebooking. You can pick any flight time you want and tell them to put you on that after your nonstop went away

Once you let me know what dates I'll see if the nonstops are truly gone then we can move onto next steps

American canceled my 6:00 am fight and put me on a 4 pm flight which was delayed 5 hours a couple weeks ago. They did this 12 hours before scheduled time. I too had swore I’d never fly American again but was sucked in with direct flight.

Because they made a substantial change, you can get a refund.

I think it’s common practice on American to cancel the earliest flights out of non-hubs if there are seats available during the day to put everyone who got cancelled on those flights. Same thing happened to us when we flew American to Cancun for our honeymoon in 2016.

Haven’t flown em since.

Thanks for the replies, I will start looking at flights again. There was no place on the email to accept the change, not that I would have. I'll be looking at other carriers to see what is available, we fly up the day after Thanksgiving so I expect the whole experience getting through the airports to be a giant kick in the nuts as it is but then they pull this crap. Oh well, I should have known better. As soon as I re-book I will let frustrations out on some poor soul that works for that shite company.

yeah changing times is one thing (I’ve not flown recently where it didn’t happen at least once) but going from NS to not is something else entirely

In the email there should have been an option for you to let them know whether you can fly with the change or not (United is good about that). You should get a refund and try another carrier

the flip side is that if the AA flight was the only NS to/from that day, they canceled it due to lack of sales and that’s the risk you take in that situation. Ask yourself what you’d have booked if that flight wasn’t available in the first place

They will give you full refund with that substantial change. Yesterday AA announced cutting 31,000 flights in November. Sounds like you’re one of the victims. Issues, delays and cancellations are inevitable with all carriers; however, AA handles the the worst. I usually try to avoid them like the plague.

Went through all the BS with AA, getting full refund, I had upgraded seats so I have to fill out refund request for the tickets along with one each for every upgrade charge. Guess I'll be getting my money back within 7 days. I looked on Southwest which who I use most of the time domestically and the Friday NS mid-day flight to KC was quite a bit cheaper than it was when I looked before so I booked it, the Monday return flight was still sky high so I put off us coming back until the first NS Tuesday morning. Ended up $40 pp cheaper when all said and done but that will be eaten up with staying the extra day but I won't be giving AA any money.
