Thoughts on todays gospel? Luke 12 49-53

quote:
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(B) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(C) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(D)
I’m leaning towards Jesus predicting his words will cause division. Not that he was hoping to cause it. I’d like to hear other opinions.

Jesus predicted the typical American Thanksgiving dinner nearly 2,000 years in advance.

Well I mean he was doing things sacrilegious to Jewish faith at the time so yeah.

Yeah that makes the explanation much simpler. Thanks

Points to the time when Antichrist is here perhaps.

Ultimately you have to pick a side.

Yet you're here. Why does it bother you others read and follow scripture?
Deep down, you're here for a reason

I guess the reason I was curious is how excited Jesus seemed in the verse.

I tend to lean on that scripture as Jesus (the man part) saying he wished he didn’t have to go to the cross in order for his message to resonate.
Knowing what his task was, he wished it (message of the cross and how choosing Him is the only way) was already understood and followed (kindled).

Father talked about all the division in the world and how it’s important for us to love others especially when they’re different than us.
It’s easy to love others who hold similar beliefs to us but very challenging with people who have differences. Put in extra effort to love them.

Truly following Jesus can make enemies, even in one’s own house.

People died by the sword, were thrown into cages with wild animals, and were burned alive for claiming Jesus is Lord. I’d say that is division brought on by His presence.
We’ve got it pretty good today. Sure we are mocked, but it’s pretty tame compared to what our brothers and sisters in the past have endured.

My wife and I had this same conversation yesterday after mass. The priest went on a tangent and lost his train of thought. Said something about gay marriage. I got an eye roll and a slap on the shoulder while walking back to the truck because I was loudly stating Father forgot to mention non binary persons.
