It looks like he tried to fix the original canopy too long, and pulled his emergency at the last possible second.

He threw out an orange bag shortly after his main collapsed, was that not the backup but it wasn’t inflating or something?

I wonder if he was fearing the emergency chute (not shoot) getting caught up in the tangled mess.
