Pretty sure there’s no ‘against the grain’. I cut my grass in the 4 different directions and I don’t notice any difference. But I’d guess you have a dull or broken blade?

OP, most people will recommend ‘sharpening’ the blades 2-3 times a year for best performance. I rarely do more than once a year. Sharpening is very easy and mower blades aren’t ‘sharp’ they are are like a butter knife.
