Dell Inspiron Laptop Bogging Down
Posted on 7/14/22 at 6:22 pm

I have had this about four years and every time it does an update it bogs everything down for hours. This started about six months ago. I have paused my updates to keep this from happening, but eventually it updates. I just got it back up and running about five hours an update was done. Even now it is running slow.
Any ideas on what is causing this and how to fix it?

There's your problem. Switch to a MacBook.

If it has a hard drive, switch to SSD. Its like getting a new computer. Get your RAM up. If you aren't attached to Windows, consider Linux or Chrome OS Flex.

I am to old to learn a new system. Plus they cost a lot more money.

I have 12 GB of ram and when I tested it using Task Manager it was 40% being used. I have 500 GB hard drive with 814 GB free. I only have issues when an update comes out. I keep pausing them, but eventually I forget and they download.
Being I got this in Dec/2018 I am looking at getting a new one at Christmas.

12 GB ram is plenty for memory unless you are doing video or high end photo editing.
A hard drive (moving parts) is a huge bottleneck on a modern computer. An SSD (solid state) is about 10-20 times faster than an HDD.
The constant read/write of an update can definitely bog down an HDD. Another culprit can be antivirus software.

If you have 12GB of RAM you're good there. Get you an SSD.
I *promise* you will see a huge differnce. SSDs are probably the most significant advance in tech within the last decade or so.
Any new PC you get will most likely come with one, btw. They aren't that expensive unless you want one with tons of space or something.

How would I swap out the HDD to a SDD without losing everything?

Macrium Reflect
This is the easiest to use drive cloning software
Is you current hard drive running at 100%? (this is a known windows 10 hard drive issue)
A SSD will resolve it and your pc will run MUCH quicker.

Yes it does run at 100% sometimes especially after an update. When the laptop feels like something is running in the background is when I check to see if an update is being done and 99% of the time it is.

The drive isn't really running at 100% but windows thinks it is.
I've had to swap drives in all my office computers. They now run like brand new machines.

I am checking into swapping a SSD for the HDD. Installing the hardware is no problem, but transferrin everything is my concern.

Some SSDs will come with software to do the transfer. For example, with a Samsung SSD, you can install Samsung Data Migration, plug the SSD in with a USB adapter, clone the HDD to the SSD, then swap the drives out.

Thanks I found a 1TB Crucial SSD that comes with Acronis True Image HD. I already have an USB to Sata cable. I also have a 120gb SSD that I am saving my pictures, etc. to just in case they don't transfer over to the SSD.

Also, look at Task Manager to see if there are any applications or processes that are using excessive RAM and CPU - e.g. Edge and Teams by default run in the background chewing up resources.

Could it be a lot of temp files?
Search for temporary folders and delete the contents.

I checked and I had 5.8 gb of temporary files. 3.4gb were Windows Update and 1.7 were system error dump files. The other files were smaller.
They are being deleted now.
