But do we really know there wasn’t any emphasis on defense in the off-season? Admittedly I didn’t attend any fall practice or scrimmages like others did. I merely followed Scuba’s updates. I don’t remember defense being an issue in those scrimmages. So what changed from then to the regular season, I guess would be the better question.

What is your theory on why you only got good defense out of 2 positions(cf & 1B)

I hope there wasn't an emphasis on defense during the off-season, because if there was, and we were still that bad then that's really not good.
We know Johnson values offense over defense, but yes he still "cares" about defense. Every coach does. I believe the bigger problem was that we didn't have anyone on staff that knew how to effectively coach players and help them improve their defensive abilities. You could tell by both catchers making the same mistake all season long, Doughty having bad technique all year at 2nd, etc.
