Going with family to Rome for Christmas. Any good recommendations for a nicer hotel???

We’re looking to spend $250-$300 a night. I’m hoping that can get us a 4 star quality hotel.

TIA

We just had 3 nights in the Starhotels Michelangelo just outside of the Vatican. It was pretty nice. I don’t remember what we paid for it. The location was great if you intend to spend time at the Vatican.

We really like the Hotel Hibernia. Very centrally located.

one rec would be to not stay near Termini. I booked a night at a nice enough hotel in the area on a layover night (my first four days in Rome were at a great AirBnb)

the area offers very little other than a short walk to the train station and a long walk to everything else.

You can get a nice hotel for that price but remember, if it seems too good to be true, it is.

IQ Hotel Roma is the go to hotel of a friend. I have stayed across the street at Hotel Viminale but never at IQ Hotel Roma. https://www.iqhotelroma.it/en/

This is subjective and there is a bus stop and metro station 5 minutes away at Piazza della Republica.

After staying in city for 4 days prior and walking nearly 10 miles a day .... i found the Termini area dirty, full of shitty restaurants/shopping, hawkers and a bit far from the really good stuff. My hotel was nice, but not worth it to stay in the area unless it's for a night because you have an early train to the airport. But whatever works. It is in fact subjective.

You can very easily do this in Rome especially in the winter.

Just look around Booking.

Pick a relatively central location since I would say of European cities public transport isn’t as great as others.

Although, I do love Trastevere as a location. Favorite hood in Rome. You guys would like it.

Agree: do not stay near Termini. It’s a shite hole.

Hotel Nazionale

That is my favorite hotel in Rome. It is a couple of blocks from the Pantheon and is on the same square the Italian Parliament building is on. Beautiful hotel. Easy walking distance to most places you will want to go and plenty of good restaurants around there.

Viminale hill is 1 of the original 7 hills and is directly in the middle of the city.

Can you give the OP a perimeter around Termini that they should stay out of?

I wouldn’t stay near the Termini at all. It is not a nice area and is not within walking distance to most other places you will want to go.

As I stated above the Nazionale is my favorite but if price is a consideration I will recommend another hotel I enjoyed very much that should be cheaper. Hotel Teatro di Pompeo. Just off Campo de Fiore. Smaller hotel but I really like the location. The basement breakfast room is a cave that was part of the old Theater of Pompey which is where the Roman Senate was meeting when Julius Caesar was assassinated there.

I am not saying that is a great hotel but I would certainly stay there instead of by the Termini.

Wife and I rented an apartment in Trastevere and enjoyed the area. Might have been the building but it was a little loud at night. Took the family and rented a place just a little north of the Vatican in a residential area and loved it. Walkable to the Vatican and Otranto subway stop close by for access of rest of Rome. Reasonable and we all had our space.

Thank you all. I’m not a big fan of Air BnB type places, but will definitely check out these hotels.

Any must dos outside of the main attractions???
