People have known this since 1939 when Vivien Leigh owned it as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind. It's not that women can't be the main character, it's that in order for women to be strong characters in this era of screenwriting/filmmaking, they have to be more masculine and their feminine qualities must be kept to a minimum.
That is woke culture. It has nothing to do with making women the main character and everything to do with how they go about making women the main character.
