The 2000 presidential election and 9/11 both brought us out of the era of good feelings we had been going through. The invasion of Iraq in 2003, and subsequent failure to find WMDs that we were promised were there, is what really put us over the edge. Things just got progressively worse from there.
Though one could argue that the Monica Lewinsky scandal in the late-90s was a harbinger of things to come.
