You can as long as you don’t get orders to leave the state or you leave your house sitting empty, sure.
Why can't you understand that it isn't because you left the state, it's because it is now no long your residence and it is not a rental property, which was your decision.
It's like you're being intentionally obtuse just because you got caught. Be a man and own your mistake. It isn't the end of the world.

Hey friend, not sure why you are so angry. I’m not being obtuse or not being a man, I just think it’s a shortsighted policy by the parish and the state. Other states recognize this fact as well (Texas, Florida, Oregon, Utah, Michigan, Colorado).
I don’t give up my residency just because I’m on active duty orders outside the state, I don’t lose my drivers license or the ability to vote in local elections. Not sure why there should be a disincentive to have military folks call Louisiana home.
I didn’t get caught doing anything. I’ll happily pass this cost on to renters, no big deal. If anything it works to my advantage as it, again, disincentives military folks from purchasing a home in Louisiana, thus increasing the renter market.
That’s all I am saying.

That isn't what's happening here and you know it. I'm sorry you aren't smart enough to realize that.

No landlords get to legally claim homestead exemption on properties they rent out. Being active military doesn't change that.
Please provide a link that shows that other states allow active military landlords to claim an exemption on a property that they are currently renting.

Congratulations. Michigan is the only state that you linked that allows the property to be rented out.
I’ll let the governor know you’re moving in next week.

I didn't find LA to be very friendly or supportive of service memebers.....they just wanted our money.
I received nothing for my retirement and the things my buddies requested of the state were all left unanswered or no nothing.
Before I reenlisted I realized LA was about to take a large chunk of my reenlistment bonus, so, with no intentions of every living in LA again, effectively getting NOTHING in return, I became a legal FL resident back in the mid '90's.

Since you are out of state on change of station... where are you living now? Are you renting? Did you buy a house at your new station?

You said "You are renting". If you mean you are renting another place for you to live temporarily while you are on duty, then I agree with you and you shouldn't lose your exemption. If you mean you are renting this place out to tenants, then the tax assessor is right and you don't get the exemption.
