No homestead exemption for active military?

Bossier Parish just cut off my homestead exemption because I’m on PCS orders out of the state.
Is there seriously no exception for active duty on orders out of the state? What a brilliant way to guarantee I don’t buy a house and return to Louisiana, all for a little extra tax money.

How did they even find out?

I’m renting while I’m gone, they review addresses to ensure the person currently occupying the home matches the name with the parish tax assessor

I am disabled veteran. We receive a nice discount on property taxes. It was up for a vote a few years ago. It passed.

You expected to keep homestead exemption for an investment property/rental?
Do other states actually do this for military?

I'm not sure that's what he said? If he is renting it then I see why he would lose the exemption. If he is temporarily out of state on orders and the house is vacant but he's still owns it, I find it hard to believe there's not some sort of relief for him to keep his exemption.

You're renting out your primary residence while out on orders?
If so then yeah they're going to pull your homestead exemption.

Yeah, Texas allows you to keep your homestead exemption for the home you purchased and intend to return to after your service is complete.
I’m sure other states do as well, I assumed (wrongly) that Louisiana did as well. I assumed the state would want to incentive veteran/mil folks to stay and return to the state. Guess I was wrong.

even while renting it out?

He said:
I interpreted that to mean that the name of the person currently occupying the home does not match his name, registered as the owner of the home. If that's what he meant, then yes that makes as he is currently using the property for income, not as his homestead residence.

I highly doubt it. I missed his second post originally.

do they allow it, or did you get away with it?

It’s for sure not my homestead residence anymore. It’s a nice home a mile from my childhood home where my parents still live and a mile in the other direction from my sister.
I guess by virtue of being active duty I’m not entitled to a “homestead” in Louisiana. I mean it’s not like I chose to leave the state, I was ordered. I bought a home that I lived in and planned to return to…. But that’s fine. I’ll pass the cost on to renters, but it’s just another reason not to return to Louisiana.

That isn't why you got your exemption pulled...it happened because you turning your residence into an investment property, which are not eligible for the exemption. You can piss and moan all you want but it's not because you're in the military.
And next time, don't assume. Call the local assessors office and ask.
ETA:
everything I'm seeing about Texas allows you to keep your exemption for 2 years if you are called away but nothing allowing you to keep it if you rent out the property. Seems like you got away with it in Texas but now you're butthurt because you got caught in Louisiana.

By virtue of it being an income producing property your not entitled to the homestead exemption. If you want to kick the renters out and not make money from them you can have your homestead exemption back. I'm not sure why you're upset about this.

Not pissing and moaning, just pointing out something I didn’t know and others might not either.
It does seem dumb that I cannot purchase a “homestead” solely by virtue of my military status.

You can

You can as long as you don’t get orders to leave the state or you leave your house sitting empty, sure.

Hey, I appreciate this info for what that's worth. Also seems like something the Louisiana State legislature might consider granting an exception for to encourage military people to buy homes and come back to the state once they end their time in service.
