They were going to a place that even the host couldn't find them - which would also mean Delores monologue at the end isn't 100% factual because she wouldn't be able to factor in humans that couldn't be found.

That being said:

There is a fairly modern theory / philosophical hypothesis (Bostrom Simulation Hypothesis) of thought that says: "if it is possible for you to create a high-fidelity computer simulation before the end of civilization; the chances of you being in a simulation increases" .. and I want to say to like 99%.

If you actually think about it, it makes sense, because the simulation would easily be run over and over and over again to make sure extinction didn't happen, and the second you made it to that point, it means it could have easily happened the exact same way every single time before...

I feel like Season 5 might delve into this, we even possibly saw 2 different Delores simulations in episode 7 with Hale shooting Bernard in the day and in the night. Season 1 - 4 could have easily all been a simulation, and if I had to guess, it's to see if humans can get out of their own loops of destruction.

P.S: This could also tie back into the after credits scene in season 2 with Delores trying to create a William and hoping one day he would chose a different path.

P.S.S: I will be surprised if we get a season 5 though
