ac/heater thermostat

thermostat is in hallway near inside unit. Temp around inside unit is 88 degrees. Unit runs many hours. Temp from inside vents runs 68-72 degrees. Does thermostat need to be relocated? When house was built had only central heat.

Is it right by the return? Should be. As in right above/beside, not in a closet close to.

typically, the thermostat is placed closed to return air grill, sounds like what you have.

Mine is located very similarly. The walls around my unit aren’t getting hot, but I have a pantry adjacent to that closet, and when I open it during the day, I can feel that it’s warm inside there, but not hot. Doesn’t affect my thermostat at all.
Is your filter in the lower part of the door to that closet?

yes, filter is in lower part of door to unit closet. Hall the closet is in is warm also.

Let me begin by saying that I’m NOT an HVAC guy, I did what I’m about to describe because it seemed like common sense.
I’ve been living in this house for almost exactly a year. I had always used one of the cheap blue/green filters until early June this year. I replaced my filter at that time with one of the more expensive filters that traps more dust and particles. Within a few days, I noticed that the air in that pantry, as well as the air in the closet where the unit is, was really hot. This had never been the case before. This continued until about a week ago. At that time I removed the more expensive filter and went back with one of the cheap blue ones. The unit has been running noticeably cooler since then. It seems that the more efficient filter was making the inside unit work much harder to pull air.
Just something to check/consider.

Are you saying the air temperature exiting the supply vents (grills) is 68-72? If so, what is the air temperature entering the return grill?

Is it in a spot that gets direct sun? We had that once in a room that had a 20 ft ceiling, and it was annoying. Air coming out of registers should be 20+ degrees cooler than air going in the return. 88 at the return is crazy high though. Draft or direct sun or something. Is air leaking in from outside right there?

In changing the filter back to a less restrictive filter from a restrictive filter? Yes - you did the right thing. Remember the primary purpose of the standard 1 inch thick HVAC filter is to protect the HVAC equipment and not improve indoor air quality for human health. As you personally learned, a highly restrictive air filter, increases static pressure, restricts air flow though the house and long-term can damage and shorten the life of HVAC equipment by making work harder than it should.
I personally use 1 inch thick MERV 4 spun fiberglass filters - protects the HVAC equipment but has minimal restriction on air flow. But in the past year I learned my filter grill can accommodate a 2 inch thick filter, so I can now use a pleated 2 inch thick MERV 8 filter with minimal restriction on air flow. Those that have a set up that can accommodate 5 inch thick filters can use an even higher MERV filter with minimal restriction on air flow.

Did this home flood? After 2016, the sheetrock guys didn't put sheetrock into the space below my ac (setup sounds the same as yours). It was drawing air, down the interior walls, in from the attic! Very hot air.

you dont want that
what i do is move it to opposite wall so its not on the closet wall and it works much better. i hate closet units for that very reason, its near impossible to keep attic heat from causing you issues
you dont want to move stat out of hallway or hallway will stay 90 degrees if the stat is in a different/cooler area
