I still find myself captivated by the callers and stories.
What fascinates me is that a caller can say the most outlandish story and the host will never insinuate he’s a nut, but instead, just play right along.
Caller: I fell out of bed, rolled under it, then found myself in another dimension.
Host: what was the temperature there?!

I stream old art bell Episodes from C2c and midnight in the desert every night on headphones. Most nights I can't separate the show from reality.

That what made Art the master C2C host. He had a way of making these people feel comfortable enough to open up, like a good therapist. Never hinting that these people may be off their rockers but at least acting like he totally believed and understood them. It was never about anything other than the caller or guest. Never seemed to be going for ratings or anything, just let the story happen.
It's exactly why I think Joe Rogan gained so much popularity, his style is very similar though Joe is operating in a totally different time and environment.
90's hosts like Morten Downey Jr and even Howard Stern(Late night TV days) started the same way but in both their cases they quickly started honing in on ratings and "trying" to be as outlandish as possible.
