They likely lasered (dusted) the stone into lots of fragments. That's why you have a stent. So that the smaller fragments that get left behind, can actually pass.

One that size cannot simply be "passed". For example, 8mm stones have about a 20% chance of being passed naturally, or without lithotripsy of some sort.

Different procedure - no laser or litho. The cut a hole in your side and thread a tube/wire into the kidney. Then in the second part (full operating room) the surgeon enters the kidney and fishes out the stone (or breaks it up and fishes out the fragments).
