It's very prevalent in healthcare--more so with clinicians than admin. Nurses and techs are obsessed with including every single accomplishment short of a drivers license on their badge/signature. There are also a ton of online "advanced" nursing degrees.

For example, an acquaintance is getting his "doctorate of nursing practice" in "leadership" in an online 12-18 month program. He's really looking forward to people calling him "doctor" when he's finished.

On the admin side, usually when I see MBA it means they went to a for-profit school.

So many years ago I had a workers comp injury and had to get surgery. I had a lady who would come to my doctor visits and she would put all of her 'titles' behind her name in her report to the company.

I would get a copy of the report and discuss it with my surgeon the following visit (pre and post surgery visits). After her first report which totally contradicted what the surgeon said he pointed to the 'initials' and told me that only insecure people would put those behind their name.

He asked me if it would be ok to speak with her 1 on 1 and I said yes. After that her reports were 100% accurate.... would really like to know what her told her.

The most pretentious is the "Reverend Doctor." See it in obits all the time.

I have to list three because all three require it listed in professional settings or I could lose my certification/license. It's a pain in the arse.

I now feel personally attacked by this post.

My office used to consult with a structural engineer who in her e-mail signature she listed a long list of professional acronyms after her name, including a PhD. Our draftsman picked up 2 mistakes in her drawings that she had failed to check.

Those acronyms only mean that she studied hard, paid more $$ for her education, earns a high salary, but other than that, she is just like the other professionals (including the draftsman). I'm not impressed.

I have worked with lots of guys for months.

6 months later I'll be like "damn dude. Didn't know you were a PhD (Chemical Engineer or Chemist).

Yet, HR lady will have all her little titles and certs from Xavier or some other bullshite in signature line of emails.

It's ok...People without degrees or certifications often confuse degrees and certifications as "titles". You aren't alone.
