By the decision. He’s correct. If I decide to get drunk and drive a car, that’s a bad decision. If I make it home safe without incident it is still a bad decision. That’s his point.

Sports, especially baseball, is a game of probability. You can make the best coaching decision based on the available evidence and things still don’t work out. Unlike fans with hindsight, coaches have to make the decision BEFORE the outcome is known.

It is similar to Bill Self telling his kids at Kansas, “every good shot doesn’t go in”. If a player does everything right and misses the shot, it’s still a better shot than some kid shooting a hook shot from half court that actually goes in. If you judge those players by their results you would say the kid that shot from half court made a better decision; but that would obviously be wrong.
