Heat illness with no preexisting condition is very survivable when it’s caught and treated early. Races like this have every treatment possible for heat illness and medical professionals who can identify and treat people for heat. There would be cool water immersion tubs and IV fluids located at the end of the race, for example.

Interested to hear what they ultimately determine to be the cause of death. Chances are, it’s something confounding other than heat stroke.

First, the runners have to be willing to use them. Maybe they were pushing for a good time and didn't want to stop for water.
Trust me, this is not strange to die after finishing a half in that type heat.
