That’s because Lebanese iced tea is a completely New Orleans invention

Not sure I agree with this statement. Back in 1989-1992'ish, I can remember ordering Lebanese tea from the Green Olive Restaurant on W. Congress in Lafayette. I lived down the street while in college and dined there 3-4 days per week (chicken shawarma plate was $4.99) The owner George, his sister, and parents came over from Lebanon during the 1980's to escape the Lebanese War. I don't think LT came from the homeland, but was an Americanized creation to supplement the beverage list. Who invented it, I have no clue. Just remember drinking it 30+ years ago. I still have George's business card and will reach out to him to inquire where/when he learned about it.

Posting just so I can find this thread again later, because the possible revelation that Lebanese tea is a roughly quarter century old New Orleans invention has blown my fricking mind.

It’s 1993, and Mona’s Cafe on Banks Street in Mid-City, New Orleans, has expanded from a Middle Eastern grocery store to a mini cafe with a curious menu of two poboys (roast beef and shrimp), and a short list of Middle Eastern foods: smooth, earthy hummus, and darkly-fried falafel of mashed chickpeas and herbs. Later, as the restaurant and its menu expanded, there were many more dishes, and a new drink menu that included hot mint tea, cola products, and an unknown: Lebanese Iced Tea—a sweet, lemony iced tea with a soft floral perfume and flavor.

I know I had it at Roman's in Baton Rouge on Government Street around the same timeframe, and maybe even earlier than that. Certainly before 1993.
