He has saved them from passing some pretty extreme legislation (abortion, BBB, the voting takeover, ending the filibuster)
I don't think the (D)s have the political capital and will of the people to go that far on all of those extremes, and they probably realize it. They still need to feed red meat to their base, but can shrug their shoulders and blame it on Manchin for not being able to pass it. Doesn't matter for Manchin, because he is in WV, and his base does not support any of this extreme policy.
The Dems are still playing the long game , and hoping to move the overton window, so maybe in 5-10 years this stuff is more appealing to the American people and they can pass it with less blowback.

There has been some discussion that when he and Sinema spike things that they have the backing of some other politicians who don't want to take the heat.

Manchin and Sinema fill the same role as Murkowski and Collins in the GOP. They are in a protected position and used to foil their constituents so the legislature doesn't have to do anything they don't want to do. It's all choreographed.

I think you have to take a win as you get it. I don't understand why they just can't elect a conservative in West Virginia, surely the labor unions aren't still that powerful over there.

I saw an article that listed Biden's approval rating at 17% (sorry I can't provide link.) If Biden's approval rating is really, under 20% in WV, Manchin is saving Manchin.

Manchin (and Sinema to a lesser extent) may have saved this country from economic and social destruction.

He is saving them from themselves by doing this but it is also making it much harder for the supposed middle of the Dems to get elected because they get the ire of the nutty base who want mandatory abortions for everyone.
Honestly this is at least less damaging to the country than the Pelosi / Reid method of “lie about your intentions then pass a bill that can’t be undone.”

Also, how stupid do the Libs have to be to think that Manchin is just going to vote with them on all of the crazy BS they want to see enacted? He represents one of the top 5 most conservative States in the country.

Manchin stared down the entire Democratic party, and will be catching hell from now on out over it, while some republican simpletons don't have the intelligence to realize and appreciate it!

they dont care if it gets ruled as unconstitutional. This is nothing more than an orchestrated leak/hail Mary to minimize damage in November. They realize how badly their party is polling and dont have many levers to pull.

Would be the best play.
Not sure how a GA "Pastor" gets by with voting to nationalize abortion though. Would think he would be able to take the heat on that bill too. Especially in his election year.
My biggest concern isn't what they try now, but what they do between elections in Nov and when they switch, if the red tsunami/wave happens. That time period will tell us who Manchin and Sinema really are.

I was down with a severe sinus infection yesterday. Sinema voted yes to the abortion bill. She was also prancing around dressed like a Assistant School teacher on the prowl.
She is the most colorful Senator in the chamber.

Pics brah?
I'd take a shot at giving her some conversion therapy training.
