From Vlad the Impaler to the Viking 'Blood Eagle', humans pretty much suck.
The blood eagle was definitely beyond heinous.
Interesting history on Vlad III Tepes though... many of the impaled bodies were his own people. His nation was ravaged by sickness and famine as his ongoing defense of his country wore on, and instead of burning/burying the corpses, he ordered them impaled and raised with the other already impaled bodies as a further deterrent to the approaching Ottoman army. It was entire veritable forests of impaled bodies that spanned as far as the eye could see, according to historical accounts.
The impaled bodies had the exact effect he hoped for, as the Ottomans were so disturbed by the sight that they turned back.
Now he definitely did impale many of his enemies, but the raised bodies on poles weren't just the casualties of battle.
In all honesty, Vlad Tepes was one of the more brilliant and patriotic leaders of that entire era. He is still revered and highly respected to this day in Romania. He was brutal and cold but defended his people the best he could, in every way he possibly could, and ultimately held off a far more massive, well equipped and highly trained invading force on basically, a bluff. Had the Ottomans not turned back when they did, Tepes' army, and country, would have easily fallen.
