Should never be more than 4. Most (all?) years, the 4th team is incapable of providing even a reasonable contest for the legit playoff teams.
8 is the right number.

You ever heard of Cinderella? Hell, just a couple months ago, St. Peter's made a run in March Madness. Loyola-Chicago made the Final Four a few years ago as an 11-seed.

Tampa Bay won the Super Bowl two years ago as a wild card.

And Burrow's Bengals made the Super Bowl this year as a wild card.

Anything can happen, and that's why more playoff teams are better. But not too many, so I think 8 is the right number.

Go back to the BCS and 2 teams. But reform the Portal, Transfer rules, and NIL first.

Everyone of those examples are played in leagues with much much more parity than has ever existed in College football.

All you’re accomplishing by adding more is further diluting the regular season for the fairy tale dream of March madness type tournament that will never happen

Keep it at 4. There is little to no parity in the sport with how lopsided recruiting is now. The 4 seed usually gets skull-dragged anyway, so what do you expect if the playoff expands? Yes, occasionally the 4 wins but it's happened twice in eight years. Also, I can't remember a year in which the best two teams in CFB did not play for a national championship since 2015.

Cincinnati Bengals were NOT a wild card this past year; they won the AFC North.
