Holy hell I missed out. A couple of buddies got me to start with Rondo of Blood then I moved to Symphony of the Night directly after. Haven't finished it yet, but these are easily two of my favorite games of all time already.

Symphony of the Night is damn near perfect, even if it is WAY easier than the classic style of Castlevania. Rondo of Blood has one of the best OSTs from start to finish of any game ever. I'm genuinely torn on which style of game I like more. Either way, I can't recommend these games enough if you haven't given them a try yet. I'm probably gonna end up playing most if not all of them.

This shite just hits different.

Castlevania II Simon's Quest was my first. I was a dumbass kid that picked it out because I thought the cover art was cool.

Little did I know that game would define "Nintendo Hard" for 10 year old me.

eta: to clarify, as in the difficulty of the game. I ended up getting Goonies II for my birthday a year later which in itself was difficult.

Unfortunately the version of SOTN you're probably playing replaced the legendary voice acting from the PS1 original.

Yeah, Rondo and SOTN's OSTs are incredible. You should try out the GBA games afterwards.

Was eyeing either Aria or Dawn of Sorrow next.

I bought the collection on steam a while back. Doesn't have them all but still good. I also really liked lament of innocence on ps2

SoTN is one of the all-time best games ever made.

SotN is the greatest game of all time in my book. There is no comparison.

I loved the music for Simon's Quest.

That was my neighbor's grandma. She bought her grandson Dragon Warrior for that very reason. He was 6. I traded Mario 2 for it, and my love affair with console RPGs was born.

It's definitely in my top 5 games of all time and is the best metroidvania out there imo. I guess you could argue Super Metroid or Zero Mission on there, but I personally like SotN better. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a fantastic spiritual successor for those that haven't played it. Highly recommend.

Bloodstained was definitely great. I just got turned on to Hades over the weekend, but that definitely doesn't fit the Metroidvania bill.

Yeah I've had a lot of coworkers that love Hades. Need to try it out. You liking it?

Yeah, it's a roguelike where you have to die over and over again. Like an uber casual Disblo.

It wasn't until my 2nd playthrough in 98 that I noticed I hit 100.1% completion, and I knew something was up. This wasn't pre-Internet, but it may as well have been. Had to piece together the clues yourself to get the inverted castle.

Right there with you. I just got into Castlevania a few years ago and I can't believe what I missed out on. The Classicvanias and SOTN are absolute masterpieces of video gaming (Simon's Quest is admittedly very obtuse, but damn is that music good). I think I've beaten SOTN 3 different times since then. One of my favorites for sure.

I strangely couldn't really get into the handheld Metroidvanias, though. Really a mixed bag for me there.

Zero Mission was pretty epic.

The GBA Collection for Castlevania on Switch is great set of games, especially for SOTN fanboys. Aria of Sorrow is the best of the bunch, IMO.
