Maybe he was planning on death by cop. She would have had to help if he was planning a true shootout.

I give the dude credit where credit is due. He wasn't getting out, so no time added to his sentence really matters.
He pulled a 15 year scam for 9 days of freedom. Totally worth it when you are looking at life.

He probably still could have attempted a shootout. He doesn't appear to have been too badly injured from the wreck and multiple firearms were in the car. Hell, the gun she used to shoot herself was probably within easy reach. He really didn't want to go out that way.
