Would #53 Balestra be a good use of one of the remaining transfer scholarships?

He played a lot in the Spring game. Another post said he is a walk-on. While he looked like he played good to me, I am only an old fan who started listening to LSU on the radio back in the late 1950s. I am curious if more knowledgeable people thought he played good.

Only if we're unable to add anyone else and just have scholarships left over.

He looked very good for a walk-on, but doubt he plays meaningful snaps, unless we have a whoooole bunch of injuries.

Nothing against the kid, but if we're able to get a TE or DB or Center from the portal before the deadline, then you can't just give him their scholarship. We just can't afford that right now.

In a vacuum (i.e. no other factors) I say yes. A solid yes.

But, with other factors my answer is "depends".

Depends on...
- is there another C on the horizon (answer is no)?
- CB's? (ehhh... just might be)

And you recruit on a 3 year turn rate. So other OL and especially other positions of need recruits vs. portal availability is also a factor. E.g.: they feel confident about CB recruits next year (and freshmen) and like them better than the potential of a CB in the portal... then give schollie to Balestra.

We will likely have room under our 84 to "reward" him with a scholarship later on... around Fall.

We won't need to use one of our last 2 available "1st time" spots....

Honest question...why tie up a scholly if he's already walked on? I guess he could leave if some one else offers but that seems unlikely since he could probably gotten a small-school offer(or maybe he did) and still walked on at LSU.

No offense to Balestra, but this is a perfect example of the good that NIL could provide. NIL could easily pay for his tuition, room & board. NIL could allow for better than average walk-ons to not count towards the 85.
