The smart play is to go with a much smaller generator and shut off part of the house and cool the rest with window or portable AC units. Because on top of all that cost, if you’re running that much generator power including 3 central air units for longer than a day it could add up
real quick.
I did the small generator window unit thing for the last 17 years, including one episode with no power for 14 days. Too much hassle ,getting gas, you can spend a hour hooking it all up, and the power comes back on in 5 minutes,
Got a 20KW Cummings air cooled from Gage total cost with tax $9,600.00. Last time I checked the operating cost was about $40 bucks a day in the summer with the AC running, With the current price of natural gas it is probably about $70 per day, but still worth it.

Just got a 24kW installed at my place, Generac, all in ~$13k. The install costs about as much as the generator itself

I’m not running all 3 of my units on 25 kw. I did shut off my unit for upstairs for my office and man cave. I ran two units and my pool chiller but shut off the pool chiller after day two because I didn’t think about it at first.

I was quoted:
1) BRIGGS -- FORTRESS 32KW GAS / 200 AMP ATS $21,261.71
2) GILLETTE -- SP410 40KW / ATSS13R200-1-1 WITH STAB LOCK DOORS $24,126.00
I think pre-Laura/Delta these numbers would be on the high side. The demand is absurd in the last two years though. I had a friend tell me he got something in this range- maybe a 35kW and was sub 20, I want to say around $17,500 installed with a fair amount of trenching (gas/electric on opposite sides of the house) about 6m prior to the “boom” in demand.
My father in law just bought a 32kW-35kW but I’m not certain the brand. He was right around the numbers you’re showing as well.
I ordered around October, maybe early November. It got put in place two weeks ago. Let’s just say the guy installing it tells you you’ll need a bigger meter- try calling your gas company first. Mine won’t put a bigger meter until the generator is hooked up, even though they more or less said, “yeah, you’re going to need a bigger one.”

Your house is roughly a little bigger than half the size of mine and most of my neighbors, Most over 6000 sq feet all have two to three AC units some 4.
Everyone here has 25kw Generac, two of my neighbors just got installed for around 8k. They will not power everything but will get you through storm. They aren’t the best but here in Mobile we don’t expect power to be out more than two weeks max. In Louisiana apparently everyone wants twice that much no matter size of house with an industrial rating. My sister lives in 1500 sq foot house in Baton Rouge and wants to spend 20k for a generator.
I think it’s more a cultural than anything else. We are not planning on hurricane parties and get together every night after storm. I am getting the hell out of here if i can. My cousins and relatives in Louisiana, want the ice cream to stay frozen and they are going to enjoy the time off.
That said look around a lot. my neighbor said the cost for that exact same generator and installation ranged from 8k to 18k just here in Mobile area, which is nuts. He shopped it around everywhere. Some of these mfers will just come to your house look you over and decide what you are worth

So almost the same price for the more powerful unit. Why ever pick the smaller one?

Sometimes fuel consumption can make it more economical to have a generator no larger than what you actually need,

I have a portable 11 kw converted to Natural gas. Can run my entire upstairs (including central AC) and everything but the central AC downstairs. All my bedrooms and an extra living room are upstairs, so it works for me. It's not automatic and does take 5 minutes to roll out of the garage, but only cost about 3k for everything including electrician installing backfeed location that is up to code and a quick connect natural gas hookup.

How was your overall experience with Gage?
They were fine to deal with. They initially told me it would be twelve weeks for delivery and it took a bit longer than that. I just badgered them via phone and email until it arrived.

We just installed a 22kw Generac air cooled for $7700. It won't run both of our electric heaters and after talking to the guy he said "you're either surviving or showing off" . If we lose power in the winter I'll use the fireplace.

What kind of hose/tubing did you use for the gas line? I am in the process of lining up my plumber and electrician to get my portable generator hook up done.
TIA

I ordered a 25' 3/4" natural gas rated hose with the quick connect fittings online. It was not cheap.

Ran my 22 kW Generac for 14 days after Ida - nat. Gas bill was only $290 for that month...well worth it for many reasons

i know the fittings are expensive, but what kind of tubing did you get?

I ordered it from uscarburation . com. For natural gas, you go to the accessories page and when you scroll down they have a section for low pressure gas rubber hoses. They have some stock footage hoses, but I needed longer so made a special order. Ordered the quick connect from them as well. They crimp the MNPT fittings on the hose and everything. I couldn't easily find anyone locally (Houston) that would do it for any cheaper than just buying it from them. Was like $250 with shipping for everything if I recall.
