No true middle infielders is the problem, IMO.
Berry has looked much, much better at 3rd the last 5-6 games. Doughty is a 3rd baseman in college and will be relocated to the outfield as a professional. Thompson is just fricking terrible.
That “seeing eye single” is entirely on Doughty hesitating.
