My grandfather used to tell us of a Bayou Manchac was one that you could run an outboard from almost La. 30 to the Amite River and that he fished in. Now it is a dead drainage ditch the stinks of sewerage (cloaca).

That 'status ' must be removed and Manchac must be widened by at 3 times its' present average width.

The Mississippi River levee killed Bayou Manchac. If it was that wide back when your grandpa was fishing it imagine what it was like in 1700. A large waterway used to flow from the Mississippi River to Lake Maurepas. Beinville sailed ships up it to the Mississippi River on his early trips to Louisiana.

It would totally change our way of life, but leveeing major rivers seems to be a major environmental negative.

Drive down the road that runs along Manchac from Bayou Paul to old Perkins and tell me the portion from Alligator Bayou west is a scenic waterway.

You can Google "Street View" that part of the bayou thanks to some kayakers

Ain't nobody taking a kayak down Bayou Manchac on the part from Alligator Bayou west to highway 30 and then the Mississippi River levee.

Bayou Manchac is a stagnant disgusting trash filled ditch west of Alligator Bayou.

ETA: But Manchac Rd is a beautiful drive I love to take sometimes.

So very true. How much drainage capacity had been lost?
His crappy does it look?

Looks like the kayak doesn't go past where Spanish Lake ties/tied in.

There’s hardly a stream west of that point.

It looks pretty terrible. There's no flow to the water - completely stagnant. Old tires, trash, etc.

It's a nice drive down Manchac Rd. Take it one day.

I mean, why would we do a simple fricking survey?

It's not like we could buy a pretty simple commercial fishfinder and do a basic scan of the target areas.

Been a few years since I went that way. Back before they emptied Spanish Lake I can't remember if the area held water or not.

I've always wanted to put in and kayak from the launch at Highland Rd Park on Bayou Fountain down to Bayou Manchac down to the Amite River and down to Freds in Port Vincent. Does anyone know how long that would take?

Is that stretch even completely navigable by kayak? I know they have a ton of trash blockage issues on Bayou Fountain they've been trying to clean up.

According to google, it is. I would expect to navigate a tree or two. Can only attest to the area around Manchac Acres to Port Vincent.

And the low water right now could make it a bit more troublesome. Shouldn't last too long though.

I wasn’t planning on tomorrow or even next year.

It’s just something I want to do eventually. It would be a pretty long trek.

I've done Highland to Manchac. It's tough in spots when the water is on the low side. There are an ungodly amount of trees in the water on that stretch. Hell, I had a huge Hackberry fall over the bayou not far from the landing not too long after I launched. I damn near couldn't get back through it to the landing on the way back

I have made the drive. It’s kind of spooky but peaceful if you know what I mean.
