Baseball Team and Talent

First off, I don’t think anyone would deny that there’s talent on this team. There are legit 4 first rounders in Berry, Crews, Morgan, and Doughty.
The problem is their positions and the lack of talent/productivity elsewhere. Berry is a pure hitter. He’ll be a DH at the next level. Morgan is a first baseman so, while he’s insanely talented, his impact defensively is limited. Doughty is probably a better 3rd baseman than 2nd, but he’s the best option at 2nd leaving a gaping hole at 3rd. Dugas doesn't look like himself, catcher is a HUGE hole. I’d love to know the number of bases and runs given up on past balls. FWIW, catcher is the one position I truly believe has hurt this team the most. You can’t have success if you’re just giving bases/runs away because your catcher can’t hold on to the fricking ball.
And finally, there is just not a whole lot of pitching. Reselmyn looks to have a lot of potential (although he looked really bad against Tech), Gervase and Vitmier are reliable, Dutton and Money look strong, and Fontenot is who we knew he was. EVERYONE else is a liability. There’s no capable lefty they can rely on for situational defense and they sure as hell don't need to rely on Cooper alone.
So yes, this team has some real talent. What they don’t have is enough dudes who are just good college players. Dudes that can lays down a damn squeeze bunt or put a damn sac fly in the air or hit the ball the other way to beat the shift. That’s the main problem, the talent gap from the top players to the everyday guys is insane.

Definitely SS
But C we actually have a solution when Milazzo is healthy

This isn't true, but we'll be fine once Milazzo comes back.

Agreed, but I think he looked that bad because it was his 4th game pitching out of the last 5.
The rest I mostly agree with

While I appreciate your thoughts and willingness to discuss LSU baseball, I don’t agree with you for the most part.
I think we have definitely beaten ourselves more so than the other teams have beaten us, minus Texas. I also think Jay is overthinking things in many cases and also very stubborn in his decision making.
His dismissiveness of Dugas was the first red flag for me. He substitutions have also been unsettling for me as well.
I think Jobert needs a night or two off. We all agree that Berry should be the DH.
Right now, the expectations have created a gloomy environment, a bit like we were feeling with end of Paul’s tenure. They don’t look like they are having any fun at all. I watched Vanderbilt last night and they were having fun and they seemed like they knew they were going to win even though it was 0 - 0 going into the 5th against USCe.
Taking 2 or 3 from Florida would certainly be some great medicine for the team.

I agree with that.
I also agree the Thompson has been a problem, I just think past balls have been more of a problem.

50 ABs, 15 hits, 18 Ks.
Don't let the average fool you.
Edit: He's looked very uncompetitive his Ks also. Breakers are eating his lunch.

It seems like 10 of those 15 hits have been clutch. Also, they are fricking with his approach with they way they work the counts. Sometimes he gets one swing.
Also, I think it would be a good idea to change the approach mid-game because the other team knows we are taking and many time they are throwing meatballs for the first pitch.

I struggle with whether it's a coached approach or hitters being uncomfortable. I don't recall JJs teams ever not being aggressive at the plate. I've seen him speak about his philosophy and it's more about being selective early in the count for pitches that can be hit hard. My guess is selectiveness has become timidness.

Dugas has the highest OBP on the team. Tell me more about his stats. His OPS is higher than Tre's.

I agree I do think he looked bad at the beginning of the year, especially on some of those strikeouts, but he seems to be coming around. He has had some very clutch hits as well. He's not yet at the level he was last year, but he's the least of my worries on this team.

by 2 points and Morgan bats in the leadoff spot. That should be expected.
Dugas has a .400 slg%, that's lower than the team average...

I do agree. I think it's worth noting the I think Dugas is a really good player. My only point is that he hasn't looked good yet THIS SEASON. I fully expect him to turn it around at some point.

Dugas bats in the bottom third of the order.

Dude, Dugas is not the problem. We need more of Dugas. Dugas was double clutch the other night and when we needed him again....guess where he was? Yep, he had been subbed out for a pinch runner, whom, by the way, never even batted, because he was also subbed out.
Dugas is not the problem.
Dugas is not the problem.

Which means he has the top 5 in front him... more base runners and opportunities from a slg% stand point. He should have one of the highest slg% on the team.... Also get more fast balls at the bottom 3rd, at least until they figure out you're struggling to make contact with breakers.

Just say you wish he'd strike out less and hit for more power and that you don't care about his OBP.
Posted on 3/25/22 at 1:24 pm to ibleedprplngld
He gets on base more than the top 5. Remember, he has the highest OBP.

I'm not saying Dugas is the problem, but to suggest he's looked like his old self so far this season is ridiculous.
Yes, we need to Dugas. Yes he is a damn good player. Yes, he belongs in the starting lineup day in and day out. No, he has not looked good so far this season.

Furthermore, now that you got my temperature rising over Dugas (I’m from the Houma area and was a big fan of him coming back), he is exactly the type of player you are saying that we don’t have in your original post.

No allegiance to Dugas whatsoever, but I have a serious problem when people call a player out for doing exactly what's being asked of him.
ETA: And Jay puts the poor kid out there after battling food poisoning and losing 12 lbs in a few days like, "Ok, hero, let's see how you handle this one."
