With newly minted Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant leaving the theater to take command of all Union forces in the field, Grant appoints Major General William T. Sherman as his successor to command all Union armies between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. Sherman would urge Grant in a letter not to take command of the Union army from behind a desk in Washington but to lead the forces of the United States in the field instead. Sage advice that Grant would adhere to.

Some five and a half months later, Sherman's victorious troops would march triumphantly into Atlanta - a major rail and supply hub located deep in the heart of the Confederacy - before embarking on his infamous March to the Sea. And the seeds of Georgia's and South Carolina's destruction were sown when Sherman took command....158 years ago today.

I doubt you ever saw the carnage he witnessed. No battle fought in the 21st century compares to what Sherman went through in the two days at Shiloh. 23,000 combined casualties. And that was back when division commanders were expected to lead from just behind the front lines.

Also…if Sherman is a war criminal in your view, what does that make men like LeMay and Spaatz?

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

Revisionist bullshite. Sherman's forces got their asses kicked at the Kennesaw campaign and at the Allatoona Pass massacre. They limped into Atlanta so pissed off that he decided to start burning everything. Burning everything wasn't the original plan. It was a temper tantrum.

There's nothing revisionist about it. Sherman's forces entered Atlanta on September 2, 1864. The next day, Sherman sent a message to Washington via Jonesboro saying quite simply: "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won."

Sherman did have a temporary setback at Kennesaw Mountain, but he moved quickly to exploit Schofield's gains by moving around the left of Johnston's army and forcing him to vacate his strong defensive positions and retreat back toward Atlanta.

As for Allatoona Pass...that battle happened AFTER the fall of Atlanta and was a Union victory.

...laying waste to the South, incinerating, plundering, vandalizing, murdering indiscriminately like giddy Demons.

There was NO logical or tactical reason for this.

This "mission" was the single most heinous immoral, evil act ever sanctioned against US citizens BY the US government in History. I would argue that the "seeds" for this wanton destruction had ZERO purpose other than as a satanic blood sacrifice. Sherman was chosen exactly because he was the perfect tool of this "mission" and by some accounts, a sadistic, certifiable sociopath.

The Bowels of Hell now embrace its son, William T. Sherman and all who planned and executed this atrocity.
