Even though I hate everything about updates since I never want or need them and they always seem to cause problems, when the notification pops up, I go on and do it. I have an HP laptop (Envy; a few years old). Had I had any idea what the latest update entailed, I would have never done it. Well, the end result is that it wiped my laptop clean: all of my downloads, documents, pictures, bookmarks, etc., etc., are gone. HP support is a joke and a waste of time. Is there any way I might recover this stuff?

Oh, and apparently I now have a new operating system on my laptop. Don't care, didn't want it, didn't need it.

Sounds like you upgraded to Windows 11 and chose the "clean install" option. You might be able to roll back the OS, but I honestly have no idea whether that will restore your data.

Thanks guys. Actually, I just clicked on "update and restart." Also, where is the partition you are speaking of?

Would be on your Hard drive. I would search through all of your hard drive, your stuff might be there. I don't know jack about windows 11 though.

Here's a link to one of my most favoritist little utilities:

SpaceSniffer

This will visualize where everything is on your drives. If you have multiple drives/partitions, run them one at a time.

ETA: And run the program as an administrator.

In settings > account, I found that I was in some sort of temporary mode. I fixed that, restarted the laptop and all of my files returned. Anyway, thanks for your help.

yeah i went down the rabbit hole on this one and deleted the extra partitions i had and now i got these unused spots that i can't combine with the existing file system on the 3 drives I have in my PC. I know how to do it the old way in DOS but i'm trying to not lose my data. Oh well i'll just keep banging my head. One drive says it is a "dynamic drive" or someshit and won't let me mess with it either.

Not being a dick, but you should consider backing up files occasionally. There is a saying that if your files are saved in one place, they aren't really saved at all. My important stuff is backed up to a Google drive and a second drive. I do this for peace of mind and so that when I want to wipe and start with a clean OS install, all I have to do is restore a couple of folders.

No idea how you managed to accidentally create a dynamic disk, but this might help with your unallocated problem: LINK

But do at your own risk if you don't have everything backed up already

Glad to hear it was still there. I figured it was unless you wiped every partition

The bottom disk "old HD" has that extra 101mb space that I want to combine and it says it will make it a dynamic disk if i do it. So if I click yes it just says operation not supported. Looks like all the stuff I want to combine(extend) is on the left instead of the right side of the lettered drive.

Your unallocated space has to be on the right for you to be able to combine it. Don't ask me why; I genuinely have no idea.

With that said, we're talking about 100mb out of a total of 1.5TB. Not sure I would stress over that too much

yeah you are right, i wanted to clean up the C: drive also from that image, but that is my SSD with windows and all my games installed on so I don't see a solution with it unless I backup everything then format it all and install windows again. ZZZZZZZZ
