but don't know how to tell male or female.

If the throat area (known as the gorget) is dark, black, red... anything other than the color of their belly, it is an adult male.

Had 1 show up and buzz my empty feeders. We filled them and it showed up again and sampled them both but we have not seen it since. North East Mississippi.

They have been around my house in North LA for the last two weeks. For some reason one male really likes my lime green Hobie kayak in the garage.

Each time I get ready to put out a feeder for the scouts another cold front comes in here in NW Arkansas.

You should still get the feeders out, the birds are coming through cold front or not. Ruby throats have already made it well north of you into St. Louis, Indianapolis, and up the east coast into Massachusetts.

I haven’t seen one yet in central Mississippi. Patiently waiting on hummingbirds and bluebirds.

We are getting a ton of them in CenLA right now.
Yesterday morning my wife half filled 14 hummingbird feeders. By nightfall they were all empty!

I put a feeder out on 4/9 and saw the first Hummer today before it was blown away by the terrible winds we are getting.

My granddaughter noticed a couple on Easter here in Avoyelles parish. They were hitting the tops of Aloe Vera plants.

I had luck with these but they are a pain to clean

Replaced them with a couple of these off Amazon

More Birds Bird Health+ Big Gulp Hummingbird Feeder, Glass Hummingbird Feeders for Outdoors, 5 Feeding Stations, 40 Ounces

May be overkill and I only leave them half full... figure if they ever got a lot of traffic I could fill them up more.
