Shooting someone for texting in a crowded theater is always Not Guilty!
Posted on 2/26/22 at 11:33 pm to ReauxlTide222
I followed this case for a while but lost track of it over the past year or so. Bummed I missed the trial.
I disagree with the verdict and do not agree Oulson's actions justified lethal force by Reeves.
Whether Oulson was a douche or not is really immaterial.
It's entirely likely there were two assholes in that theater that day and one of them just got away with killing the other one.
I feel bad for Oulson's wife (who got shot herself in the hand in the scuffle) and kid.
I am a proud gun owner and believe fully in the 2A. With that said, I don't believe you can just pull out your smokewagon and start shooting people because you have an argument, or someone throws a box of popcorn at you, or even a cell phone.
Gross miscarriage of justice IMHO.

Reeves told authorities he was “in fear of being attacked,” according to the complaint. He and his attorneys have argued Oulson threw a cellphone at Reeves’ head and was aggressively leaning over a chair toward him when the shooting occurred. Prosecutors have said popcorn is not a weapon and added witnesses did not report seeing Oulson throwing his cellphone.
Other than that, how was the movie?

8 years to go to trial. That seems like an outrageous amount of time from accusations to trial.
Thought it was funny when the prosecution was struck these witnesses couldn't recall what they said in written statements.
It was 8 friggin years ago.

Effective to end someone else's life unjustifiably.

You better hope you never get in argument with someone who feels the same way as you do tough guy.
This old fricker was treated with kids gloves because he was the ex-police chief and don't tell me delaying the trial for 8 years didn't benefit him and his defense.

Yeah I'm all for 2A and stuff but this case seems a little ridiculous. How did the man fear for his life over a cell phone?

Correct. I have heard the media down here say "He was shot over popcorn" a million times, trivializing that the dead guy was 6'8" tall, and absolutely out of control, and assaulting a 71-year-old man.
I watched the trial, and the prosecution changed him to 6'4", because 6'4" is less scary than a guy that is bigger than most of the NFL, and a big chunk of the NBA. There were 2 elderly folk on the jury.

Except the video caught the popcorn thang, th ephone thang, and a couple of attempts at bitch slapping an old man. I bet he stays off his phone after the "Stay off your phone" announcements from now on. And his little rodent-looking wife, too.

Oulson was the one "out of control" while Reeves stayed seated and pulled a gun and shot him? Hyperbole much?
I am by no means defending either parties actions but you are absolutely overstating the level of the conflict here and "danger" (perceived or real) that Reeves found himself in.
Granted, the legal statute states you have to fear for your life. I don't for one second believe Reeves feared for his life based on his body language and actions in the video. He's saying he did to cover up for being pissed off and shooting the guy because he reacted with emotions to the conflict.
The letter of the law in FL is too loose in this regard. There is no way to prove the way someone "feels" and whether their actions are due to that fear or something else more nefarious.

That's not what I saw in the video.

The movie wasn't even on yet and the dude was texting the babysitter. It's arseholes like you and Reeves who start shite over something so trivial.
And yes, the dead dude will no longer text in a theater.

You're losing your argument here with insults.
This same "rodent-looking" woman has won a civil suit for an undisclosed amount from both Reeves and the Theater.
Reeves has also spent the last 8 years basically under house arrest.
Reeves also has had to pony up $200k in legal fees.
Sure doesn't seem like he's a winner and if there was any point to prove it sure cost him a hell of a lot.
Now, instead of retiring like normal people he can die penniless with little to nothing to leave his heirs. In addition another woman and child don't have their husband/Dad.
Doesn't sound like a "win" to me, but you do you.

Oulson was screaming, cursing, throwing things, taking an old man's popcorn away, swinging at the old man and trying to climb over the seats to get at the old man. The old man had tattled on him, and must be punished.

What level of danger should the old man have felt from the giant human having a tantrum because he had been tattled on?

That is trivializing, and omitting thee rest of what it says. It also says "or be in fear of great bodily harm." The giant, screaming man that was committing aggravated assault on him, scared him.

Your version. Not what I saw in the video.

A level that justified taking someone's life? Did Oulson ever physically touch Reeves? No. Is a cell phone or box of popcorn a lethal weapon in anyone's rational judgement?

Oulson was not a "giant" and you're portraying Reeves as a feeble old man who was cowering in fear. I didn't see Reeves try to defend himself, retreat, or hear of testimony where he was calling for help. Was he in fear truly? We'll never know for certain but I doubt it because he knew he could pull his gun and escalate the situation.

Two wrongs don't make a right and while Oulson's actions may be inexcusable it does not mean you should get to kill the guy and walk away.
I don't understand how Reeves is a hero to anyone unless it's just really old guys who think this is some kind of "win" because Oulson was younger and bigger than "poor old Reeves". It's a retarded "Well, he showed him!" mentality devoid of any moral consideration whatsoever.

That looked like a big fat yes in one of the videos they showed repeatedly.

The jury's opinion counts more than yours.
quote:Who is he a hero to? Link to anybody saying he was a hero. I think it is a bad situation, where the guy that "Karen'ed the other guy chose a guy that wanted to make it physical. The 6'8 guy is used to using his size, and getting loud, to get his way. It didn't work out for him once he started the aggravated assault thing.
I don't understand how Reeves is a hero to anyone
quote:I may have found your problem. In Florida, you do not have to scream and holler help if someone is attacking you. You have No Duty To Retreat.
I didn't see Reeves try to defend himself, retreat, or hear of testimony where he was calling for help.
Remember that if you ever come down here and feel like throwing random crap at strangers, in the dark. Mmmkay?
