Looks like the family vacation is off to Myrtle Beach in June. I see it’s only about 80 miles to Wilmington and 100 to Charleston.

We for sure plan on doing Charleston for Fort Sumter and Patriots Point, and potentially driving up to Wilmington for the USS North Carolina, our teenage son is into the history.

What are some other highlights of the area, great food, etc?

The traffic between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach can suck during high season.

Murrells Inlet, SC and Calabash, NC for fishing communities with good seafood.

Are you making these day trips while at Myrtle Beach? Sounds like your going to spend 6+ hours in a car each day you travel to these places. Do Myrtle Beach stuff and come back another time for Charleston or Wilmington.

Did somebody lose a bet?

Please tell me you were dragged into this vacation by an in-law with a free place to stay or a family reunion you didn't plan.

The only acceptable excuses for Myrtle Beach.

Just south of Murrells Inlet is Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park where Anna Hyatt Huntington’s unique house and workshop is.

ABOUT BROOKGREEN GARDENS
Registered as a National Historic Landmark, Brookgreen Gardens is a wonder of native flora, fauna, and American sculpture. Considered by many to be the jewel of the Grand Strand, Brookgreen Gardens has been delighting visitors since its creation in 1931 by Anne and Archer Huntington. Located off Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet, the entrance is conveniently marked by the larger-than-life sculpture Fighting Stallions by founder Anna Hyatt Huntington. Among the nine-thousand lush acres of South Carolina history and Lowcountry, landscapes you will find the most significant collection of outdoor figurative sculpture by American artists in the world. At Brookgreen Gardens you will learn about the rice plantations of the 1800s.
At Murrells Inlet is a string of 8 to 12 restaurants connected by a board walk along the marsh. There are usually 2 or 3 bands/singers playing at several of the restaurants.

If you are looking for an unforgettable experience on the beach try scuba diving then look no further than San Diego, CA. Just as scuba diving San Diego is a playground above water, so is the Pacific offshore.

I would pick one of Wilmington/Charleston and pick where you stay in Myrtle Beach depending on that. If you want to do USS Wilmington then stay in North Myrtle Beach/Cherry Grove. If you want to do Charleston stay in Myrtle Beach/Surfside/Pawley.

Actually I'd say enjoy the grand strand and stay in MB wherever (we always did NMB) and do one day in Wilmington. Then save Charleston/Sumter for a proper Charleston trip.m

I don't get the hate for MB. I enjoy going there. It may be partially the nostalgia of going with my parents years ago, but I still enjoy going today. I stay in NMB since it usually seems to be a little less crowded.

Food at Barefoot Landing: Lulu's, Blueberry's Grill, Flying Fish
Food at Broadway: Landry's, Yamato Steakhouse, Margaritaville
Other food: Hook & Barrel, Pier 14, Captain George's
