Explanation: This is what the Earth looks like at night. Can you find your favorite country or city? Surprisingly, city lights make this task quite possible. Human-made lights highlight particularly developed or populated areas of the Earth's surface, including the seaboards of Europe, the eastern United States, and Japan. Many large cities are located near rivers or oceans so that they can exchange goods cheaply by boat. Particularly dark areas include the central parts of South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The featured image, nicknamed Black Marble, is actually a composite of hundreds of pictures remade in 2016 from data taken by the orbiting Suomi NPP satellite.

makes it easy to visualize where people live and where the don’t. Overlay that night map of the US with a population density and/or a blue/red electoral map and they are identical

Interesting how the majority is in the equatorial line +/- 30 degrees latitude. I guess I see more lights in the northern hemisphere than the south, especially in Europe.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia: Alaska is the state that is the farthest north, east, and west.

I didn't realize how far east S. America is compared to north. I heard that no part of South America is west of North America. But it doesn't look that way on the map.

Is this updated, it looks like the same shot from like 10 years ago. It's gotta be more now.
