We shouldn't be so critical. What if they electrocuted themselves trying to figure it out?

So you're saying we're free to fall back to the original conclusion?

Lonnie Utah has tracked me down and by command performance, I hereby render an update on said mystery outlet. (Actually, I think Lonnie's sweet on me, but that's a matter for another time.)

My son reluctantly let me use this outlet, so I don't want to stir the hornet's nest any more than I have to. I offered to pay for the installation of a working outlet up there but he's not thrilled with the idea. I respect his decision.

I've done nothing new except fold up my tent and go home for now. Next time I visit him, I'll do a battery of A-B comparisons - switches on and switches off - and see if I can narrow the source to only one combination of factors.

Lonnie - I was in SLC just last year. So sorry I missed you.... sweetie.... Mwahh!

ETA: And I forgive you, Korkstand, for your unkind remark. I've heard it said you're actually a nice guy, but might just be a rumor.

Here on the tech board we are very much concerned with outcomes, so do keep us posted on the status of the outlet as well as your budding relationship with Lonnie.

Good news, the OP showed back up.

Bad news. He's throwing shade at several of us.

One way to find out for sure without a doubt which breaker is feeding it is to take a pair of insulated pliers with a paper clip shaped to short out the hot and neutral. It will instantly trip the breaker that is feeding it. I am a retired electrician of 34 years. I have actually had to do this a couple of times. It will pop and you will see an arc at the receptacle. Like I said. It is a last resort but guaranteed to work

Could you do the same with a GFCI tester? Curious as to what would happened if I pressed the button on it without a GFCI on the circuit.

I think the problem is the receptacle is switched by a mystery switch so it's not always hot.

Also I would probably link people to a breaker finder before telling them to stick a paper clip in the outlet.

I was kinda looking forward to the fireworks in the response.

I know you're an electrician and I'm not, but my grandpa was (he passed in 1977). He had a special "outlet tester" which was a plug connected to a junction box of a small piece of plywood. It had a light switch on the junction box that shorted the hot and neutral. If he couldn't find the circuit break (or fuse back in his day) he'd flip the switch and it would kill the circuit. A wee bit safer than what your suggesting....
