Looking for recommendations of a good baseball novel. I’ve read plenty of good non-fiction baseball books but haven’t read any novels. Spring training is right around the corner and I’m trying to get my fix in the meantime.

If you want something a little different, try The Universal Baseball Association. It was written in 1968 about a lonely guy who is obsessed with playing a stratomatic-type baseball boardgame. He has played season upon season of his league and is intimately familiar with the teams and rosters. When a bad roll of the dice results in an on field tragedy, the player's obsession begins to affect his real life.
Edit: I see it was already mentioned.

Long Gone by Paul Hemphill is a fun read…a bit different from the classic HBO movie that was based on it but fun nonetheless.
A story with a heart of gold about love and the loss of innocence at the bottom of the most minor league in baseball--the class D Alabama-Florida League in the 1950s, with a sour old maverick manager, a yearning teenage second baseman, and a black catcher masquerading as a Venezuelan.
I lucked into a copy at 2nd & Charles for $4-$5 bucks last summer.

If you want something else a little different, try Troy Soos' baseball mystery series. Set in the 1910s, it follows a major leaguer who happens to stumble onto a murder from time to time. Think Murder She Wrote, except with Ty Cobb instead of Angela Lansbury.
The first book is Murder at Fenway Park.

If you want to read a fiction football story I would recommend Fourth and Long Gone by former coach Pepper Rodgers. It's loosely based on the recruitment of Bo Jackson by Auburn and Alabama. Really funny book.

"Bottom of the 33rd" by Dan Berry which chronicles the longest game ever. Occurred in 1981 between the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Red Sox. A typo in league rules kept the umps from suspending the game and it continued until around 4 am. You can imagine the hijinks in a game like that. It was a fun read.
