I'll definitely get another. They ruined me for other breeds.

They are the most intuitive animal I have ever been around.

and to the op:
yes, i would trust a GSD with pets and kids. they are mild tempered until someone tries to hurt their pack. dobermans are similarly protective but can be more aggressive to outsiders regardless of owner’s command or disposition. however, GSDs follow the lead of their owner. if outsider is welcomed by owner or pack, GSD will show the same disposition. they’re genetically built to be extensions of their owners, so they’re very good at interpreting human behaviors and super easy to train.
you’ll see that by nature they live and love to serve.
they want to do right by you — always…
and imho, they always will.

its good that you acknowledge this though. way too many people get pets not knowing what it fully takes for a given breed/species and dont consider their own limitations.

The best damn alarm you'll ever get. They hear smell and see everything. Best dog there ever was.

Get a lab

Good advice here.

Labs are one of the best breeds for children. Also like being part of a pack.

Who the frick tells their insurance when they get a dog? They might charge you more but they aren't going to pay shite for the dog.
Would you prefer to wait until your new pup bites somebody and they get Gordon before you find out your policy had a dog liability exclusion?

And depending on who you’re insured with, you could end up getting dropped if they find out you had a dog that was on their prohibited breed list.

We have a 6 yo female. Same stuff as most have already posted. Mine is basically under my feet anytime I'm outside trying to do something. Will literally throw one of her toys at me until I stop what I'm doing and play with her. Almost can't tire her out. Very anxious and fidgety unless she's had a ton of stimulation. She'll rarely just lay down and chill if I'm around her.

Will bark her head off at new people but never had her snap at anyone. As soon as she realizes they're a friend it's all good and it's crazy how well she remembers people she's only met a few times. Crazy smart, which can be good and bad.

We don't have a child but I would be a little concerned with how rough she can be. It's not intentional but it's just how she plays. She'll bump into me pretty hard just following me around the yard and I'm not sure she'd understand how to take it down a notch for a smaller human. Love her, but my next dog might be a little lower maintenance if I'm being honest. Just depends on what you want in a pet and what kind of time commitment you're prepared to make.

Also, the shedding is... significant.

makes sense

I've gotten to where when I'm walking around I make sure I leave enough space on each side of me for her to pass. If I pass too close to my truck she'll fly in from behind me and wedge between me and it or whatever I'm passing. Gonna blow my damn knee out one day

I'm on my fourth heeler now, the first time I took the first one to a dog park to run he was just a pup, within five minutes he had all of the dogs in the park herded and running laps around the perimeter of the fence

I have not interacted with too many but my older brother, who has a 10 month old, has one. It is a female who they have done a bad job socializing with other people/dogs.

She is about 3 or 4, barks at every single person coming into the house, gets somewhat aggressive every time someone leaves the bathroom because she thinks they are coming back into the house, and has gone at my dog (lab mix) when I come home. Every time my brother just shrugs it off (oh she didn't know you in the bathroom, she was excited from playing fetch so when your dog came she was just overstimulated etc.). I think his entire opinion will change when that dog kind of overreacts to something their son does. I just hope it isn't too late and nothing serious happens.

In conclusion, I have limited experience but I think Sheps need a ton of socializing and training. I know there are great ones out there but the one I have interacted with has left a sour taste in my mouth

My female GSD passed away two years ago, but she was a great family dog. She considered my son her puppy and wherever he went she was right there herding him to where she wanted him to be. They are great dogs provided you can get them from a reputable breeder. Some are very neurotic but luckily my female calmed down once she hit about 3. The vet said she was one of the most laid back shepherds he had worked with. Miss that dog everyday and would get another but my wife hated the shedding and to be honest I would probably compare any other GSD with her and might be disappointed.

I wouldn't get a dog just based on the fact you had some interactions with that type and they seem cool.

Like most dogs, you have to learn about their personality traits then see how their needs and traits match up to how you live.

Don't get a big dog with little space for him/her to run around then get pissed because the dog tears up shite in your house. Dogs are like kids. When they get bored they will get into stuff they are not supposed to.

I think they are protective so you want to make sure they establish a relationship with people who come to your house on a regular basis so they understand they mean no harm. But again, don't just get one because you think they are cool.

We had a German Shepard when kids were young. Dog was without a doubt the best babysitter. If kids were in back yard with her, there is no way anyone was stepping foot in the back yard or them leaving yard. She was more protective if adult was not there. It’s like she knew she was the boss then. She would even try to “rescue” them from pool. I never had a doubt about her hurting member of her pack. She nipped at lawn care man one time when kids were in back yard. Grabbed his jeans to pull him away. Once kids inside, she didn’t pay lawn guy any attention.

German Shepherds are horrible as pets. Probably right behind pitbulls, and chows, equal to a rottie or dobie.

If you're going to have a baby or if you love your king charles, do not get one.

German Shepherds were bred as police dogs and have a genetic disposition to attack jews and blacks. People get them thinking they are getting a black lab but are in for a rude awakening when it attacks other dogs and kids in the neighborhood. Super aggressive breed #hellolawsuit.

They are the most fascinating breed to me. Its uncanny how intelligent they are and how they can synch with their humans. They're the swiss army knives of dogs.

They are really good at livestock tending too.

GSD's protect sheep herd.
