They played in a divison where Mac Jones is the best quarterback they face in division games and in their non-division games they faced whatever backup Saints quarterback was starting, Taylor Heineke, Trevor Lawrence, Carson Wentz, Ryan Tannehill, whoever started for the Texans when they played them, over the hill Matt Ryan, and over the entire mountain range Ben Roethlisberger and Cam Newton. The only good QBs they played against in the entire regular season were Mahomes and Brady. Sometimes you have to dig deeper than skin level to analyze statistics.

The chiefs were the best defense in the nfl from week 8 through the season as well……

You can’t stop QBs like Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, etc in the modern nfl unless you get relentless pressure

Not to mention when you get up in a game, against week opponents, that takes the pressure off your D and they can pin their ears back. Plus if they get up by a few scores it forces the other team to pass more. Against rookie/crappy QB's your going to get a lot of 3 and outs. I know they had a good D last year but didn't realize they were that good this year.
Also most of the QB's they play against aren't mobile runners like Mahommes. Or have the weapons the chiefs have.
NE were gifted 6 wins every year because they played in that conference. They didn't have any competition to keep them from the 1 seed every year.

Every time I heard them say that…

They played a garbage schedule. Definitely not the best defense.

They played 4 good offensive teams (one of them twice) all year. Oof.
