LSU Basketball Offensive Woes

It’s disappointing to drop 3 in a row and already looking outside in on the top 4 in the SEC. But, after we get healthy, I feel we will make a run to finish off SEC play. Remember, we want to be hot in March, not the end of January.
Imo, this team will go as far as our offense will take us. We are going to defend well, it’s all about how many can we score. Below are some adjustments that I believe need to be made on the offensive side. What do y’all think?
1. Days has got to work inside out. We need to make it a priority to go to him down low early. He’s at his best when he’s not forcing 3s and he’s getting pick and pop looks. He needs to get off the 3 point line and play in the paint.
2. Mwani has to bring an offensive presence. At a minimum he has to show the ability to attack the basket. He’s always done a good job at offensive rebounding but he needs to continue to live around the basket.
3. It’s time for Eason to start. He has been phenomenal coming off the bench and I understand the fouling concern. But we start every game playing from behind. We need to start him and manage his fouls as we go.
4. Reid’s minutes need to be reduced. I’m not sure who takes those minutes at this point. Does O’Neal need more opportunities? Is Fudge the guy to get those minutes?
5. Do everything we can to stay out of half court sets. It’s simple, we are absolutely terrible at running a half court offense. We need to continue to press and run half court traps that leads to some quick transition baskets. This team is at its best in transition.
6. After Pinson is healthy Gaines needs to play primarily off the ball. He has proved that he has a low basketball IQ for a PG. He simply creates way too many unforced errors.
That’s my morning rant of LSU basketball. I’m confident we will make adjustments and begin to gel come March.

Gaines is a backup pg. he’s been the second best scorer after Eason since Pinson went out. So he’s good coming off bench. Especially with bud defense added in. Pinson is needed greatly though. And we gotta figure out how to add in murray more to offensive game plans. Days is a hustle guy and fooor stretcher. But should be our third offensive option.

This is the big one for me. They run the offense entirely too much through a guy that’s simply a very poor offensive player. It bogs the whole thing down as he dribbled the ball on the perimeter with no purpose.

Yes he does. The problem is that the other team is allowed to beat the shite out of our guys when they try to go inside so they start settling for outside shots.

Because our top 2 guards coming into the season are hurt. He’s a Soph who is growing and getting better. He wasn’t supposed to be the main guy.
Man, some of you people just don’t get how a team works

It's obvious we need Pinson back to get some offensive production back. When he is back we will automatically save 3-4 turnovers a game and get more free throw production.
The primary difference between Pinson and Gaines is that when Pinson drives and his passing lanes are defended he makes the short jumper or floater. Gaines cannot make those shots close to the basket in a consistent manner.
The fact that Pinson can and does draw attention it opens up the floor for Murray, Eason, Days and Fudge.
I say this and Pinson is not an elite point guard. He does a fair job at the point and that's all this offense really needs at this point to get back on track.

shite take. Officiating hasn’t been great. But to use it as an excuse for why Days doesn’t play around the basketball is BS.

I agree with you, coming into the season, Gaines should have been our #3 guard. He would have been a hell of a #3 guard at that. But, with the cards we have been dealt, we need to make an adjustment. Not a knock on Wade or Gaines.

You have never played basketball.

This team shoots poorly, Pinson will help some because he's the QB of the offense. But ultimately, you have to put the ball in the hoop. We're not very good at that, and that's why we struggle in half court.

We don’t have anyone that can dribble a basketball cleanly

He will help a lot.

I don't disagree.
As a player it is frustrating to not get calls when trying to penetrate. So you start settling for bad shots. In the last three games you can see the frustration. Right or wrong it is what it is.
Part of the problem is we are really young when Days and Pinson are out and the inexperience is obvious.

So the answer is no. I figured as much.

One take I will throw out here, very early in the year we were actually running a passing type offense and WW even spoke to it saying different personnel have to adjust accordingly,
But gradually we morphed back into the more iso based dribble drive sets WW has run since he's been here. And even with Pinson who is without question the best on the team at creating for himself and getting to the rim that's what we've been running mostly since SEC play began.
Toward the end of the game last night WW made a good adjustment and started getting Eason the ball at the elbow and it was effective but much too late.
Eason trying to dribble in from the wing ain't gonna cut it and we ran that way too much.
Murray is getting better each game and he is decent at squaring and driving but still not there yet to hang your hat on as a dribble drive guy IMHO. I think he could be in the near future. I would like to see him more running of curls to get a shot. He's a good shooter - and has shown some mid-range touch too which I know is taboo in today's game but he's good there.
If we are going to stick with this style Pinson back definitely helps....but I still do not think that style is going to maximize what we can do offensively.
Yes we are limited offensively, but we can't compound that by making ourselves too easy to guard.

Yes, it'd be a different and much better team with Miller & Pinson. With that said, The veteran Days has been absolutely horrible and is not helping this team at all on offense. He needs to quit shooting 3's and concentrate more on his inside game.
He's always been streaky, but now it's just ridiculous. I'm sure he's a great 3 shooter in practice, but that doesn't translate into game time shooting.

Also, WW has a bad habit of over pumping players before the season starts. He said that Wilkinson with his newly transformed body would shine this season. Mwani has been a mediocre role player at best.

This thread was not intended to create a pissing match on who has played more ball in their life. I played a lot of basketball in my life and I’ll leave it at that. My point is, you can not change your offensive philosophy based off a 3-4 game stretch where officiating has been poor. If I remember correctly, foul differential was much closer last night than the previous 3 games.

WW needs to sit him in front of the film of the Florida game in which he only shot 3 threes and scored 20 points and tell him this is what I need you to be for this team.
