Greater numbers lost their lives in non combat situations in the Civil War.

WW1 because of trench warfare.

Viet Nam was unpopular in the later stages. There is a dividing line between popular and unpopular.

US soldiers experienced very little trench warfare. We got ole Fritz out of the trenches and made him fight in the Argonne Forest.
