The worst wars to be a US soldier in

1). Vietnam- the fighting conditions and terrain were horrendous and you were drafted to an unpopular and unwinnable war. At least there was a morale motive and goal in WW2. These soldiers got forced in to the worst possible hell you could imagine and came back rejected by their country.
2). Civil War- l think everyone is aware of the terrible conditions in this war.
3). WW1- this war gets overlooked because of how of a short time period we were involved in this war. However; the casualties alone in correlation with our time involved speak for how deadly this war was. The Meuse–Argonne offensive was one of the deadliest battle in US history but this is always overlooked because of WW2.
But if I was to pick 1, I would choose Vietnam because of the draft and no end goal to that war.

I mean Civil War and it’s not a question. Especially between those listed
Eta: They were starving, huge percentage dying from disease, and if shot in extremity, no matter what, cut off

Anything pre-modern medicine and antibiotics.

The fact that limbs were sawed off with no anesthetic in the Civil War puts it near the top. At least morphine was available by the time WW1 rolled around.

Vietnam had one of the highest survivability rates of any war with medivac choppers ferrying wounded soldiers to surgical units. Civil war the worst by a long shot as any wound could lead to infection or amputation and battlefield surgery was horrendous

Philippine resurrection wasn't great

Revolutionary war was no picnic.

Greater numbers lost their lives in non combat situations in the Civil War.
WW1 because of trench warfare.
Viet Nam was unpopular in the later stages. There is a dividing line between popular and unpopular.

All wars...all are the worst to be a US soldier.

Not that nam wasn’t bad, but modern medicine and close air support beat the hell out of bayonet charges and trench warfare. Also Korea in winter must have been terrible.

Wound treatment for the civil war was absolutely brutal.
That’s a big pass from me, dog.
Get shot in nam, at least you have good drugs and antibiotics.

If you're in the thick of it it's the worst war ever. However, it's highly situational. I read a short memoir of a guy who was Navy blimp pilot in WWII. By day he tooled around in the sky at 35 mph looking for nonexistent U Boats. By night he slayed poon in the Miami nightclubs.

The Forrest Gump effect. Some people are just born to live charmed lives.

I can’t imagine how those guys marched during the civil war. Their shoes were terrible. They marched for weeks at a time, literally all day at times. Then battled. Then just marched more. No modern medicine. You had some morals and respect for rules of war until that coward Sherman started destroying towns and murdering innocent people.

Any war before the advent of "modern medicine".
Battlefield treatment and removal of the wounded (ambulances) had greatly improved by the time WWI started.
Visit the Civil War Medical Museum in Frederick, MD. The medical treatment was absolutely barbaric. In many cases men had arms and legs amputated without anesthesia.
National Museum of Civil War Medicine
A Civil War medical kit.

Using tactics meant for smoothbore muskets while actually using rifled muskets is a recipe for a ton of casualties. I can't imagine getting hit with 1.5 oz chunk of lead.
Not to mention the archaic medicine and starvation/disease

I'd pick the Civil War and World War 1. Disease during the Civil War and soft lead projectiles with low muzzle velocity made for some horrendous wounds that resulted in death or amputation. There were no modern medevac and surgical facilities like they had in Vietnam, which would have mitigated much of the suffering that occurred during the CW. There was also a very unpopular draft of Union soldiers during the Civil War that resulted in violent riots in New York City.
World War 1 wasn't much better than the Civil War in some respects. You had outdated tactics that were similar to those of the Civil War, but deadly accurate artillery, machine guns, other advanced, modern, weapons, and poisonous gas inflicting gruesome casualties. Not to mention being chewed to pieces while entangled in barbed wire. Wet, rat-infested, trenches (not unlike what was seen in the latter stages of the Civil War) would not have been any fun, either.

Vietnam
Civil was far worse. The medical supplies and methods were far superior to what those boys had in the Civil War.
If you were on the front and came back home unscathed, it was a miracle.
