The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) is adopting the most recent COVID-19 booster shot recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Effective immediately:

DOH recommends a single Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer) vaccine booster shot for everyone ages 12 – 17 who completed their primary vaccine series at least five months ago.
People 18 and older who completed their primary series of Pfizer vaccine at least five months ago should get an mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) booster.
Moderately to severely immunocompromised children ages 5-11 should get an additional dose of the Pfizer vaccine 28 days after their second shot.
“It is important all people covered by these new recommendations take advantage of the extra layer of protection that booster shots provide. They ramp up the level of your neutralizing antibodies tremendously,” said State Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Char, FACEP.

The booster interval recommendation for people who received the J&J vaccine (2 months) or the Moderna vaccine (6 months), has not changed.

Last month, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino revealed booster shots would be required for locals to be considered fully vaccinated.

The rule was supposed to go into effect on Jan. 8 but was delayed until Jan. 24 so people have time to schedule booster shots, reported KHON 2.

That part is in reference to Maui.

Maui restaurants are already requiring booster I think.

I was on Maui over Christmas time and all the chatter was that they were going to start enforcing booster hard. All restaurants were stringent on masks and checking vaccination cards.

The amounts of people that exercise outdoors with a mask or in the water with a mask out here is fascinating.

What's really fascinating about this particular situation blowing up in the news today was that it was already reported a week ago.

Wonder why national news like ABC is finally just now reporting this.

I heard about this and got my booster yesterday. Not because I’m going to Hawaii but because it probably means other places are going to require a booster in the near future and I wanted to go ahead and get it over with.

Cool, your choice. I just got over two coronaviruses: delta + NL63 (causes common cold). So I'm not really worried about a booster at the moment. Big Island hasnt had nearly as many restrictions as Oahu or Maui just FYI for you travel planners.

Update: Governor gave a press conference and was directly asked when this requirement was formally coming.

He stated that the State is working with the CDC to try and change definition of fully vaccinated (State of Hawaii has expressly worked within CDC guidelines so far with Safe Travels Program). Additionally, said there were logistical concerns (not enough people hired) so they are working on automating the system.

So in summary, still no formal announcement and when the announcement does come, it will be about 2 weeks after that.

Maui announced Friday they are dropping the booster requirement. So doesn't look like it will happen to any of the other islands.

Going even further, Ige said that the criteria and conditions for ending the state’s Safe Travels program are now being developed by the Hawaii Department of Health. Lt. Gov. Green has been intimating for the past few weeks that Safe Travels could end soon.

This comes as Hawaii reported just 533 new Covid cases today, and no additional deaths. That’s down by more than 90% from just a few weeks ago during the Omicron surge.

Lieutenant governor addresses Safe Travels.

In an interview, gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Josh Green said today, ”I think I can say it would be wise for people to keep close tabs on Hawaii because we may very well be able to welcome everyone back by spring.” That confirming his belief that Safe Travel is about to end.

Hawaii Safe Travels remains in place, at least for now.

There were no further changes announced this afternoon. For now, there are three possible exemptions from quarantine on arrival in Hawaii. Those are 1) primary vaccination, 2) approved testing within 72 hours of travels to Hawaii, or 3) having been recovered from Covid within the past 90 days.

I’m in Hawaii right now. Oahu has been asking to see vax cards and ID to enter restaurants etc., but not on the Big Island.

If it wasn’t important from a military standpoint I’d want to eliminate that little shithole from statehood

True, there was a huge push when I was there to remove tourist. Don't know how many people discussed it among locals I met.

Was there 5 years ago and never had any problems with locals while surfing Maui and Oahu. I am heading back in May and hopefully this Covid shite doesn’t frick it up.

Locals where handing out papers to tourist and plenty of ads wanting to end colonization of the island. There has been a push to give more of the land back to their ancestors and what not as well.
