russell shepard evaluation

first of all cy ridge lost-- i left when they were down by 10 with 4ish minutes in the 4th quarter with the other team driving and draining clock.
second off, the offense is elementary at best. seemed like a jr high playbook with about 8 or so plays. every drive was zone read left, zone read right, 3rd and long: wait for shep to make something happen
the passing offense was amateur. almost all plays invloved a sprint out to trips and the wide side of the field, outside WR does an out, 2nd guy does a corner and the inside guy runs a streak-- when none were open, it was russell trying to reverse field and run. pretty simple. its a wonder he has any passing yards.
he did run a good 2 minute drill at the end of the 1st half where he actually stayed in the pocket on passes, led them down the field, and threw a great fade in the corner of the endzone from about 20 or so yards out.
he also had a ~70 yard TD mid 2nd qtr. my problem was they never left him in the pocket to throw, always putting him on the move.
running wise-- he didnt bust a long one, just clawed for enough to move the chains. too many times was left for dead trying to fake out multiple defenders in the backfield. he didnt try to give yards to gain them and reverse fields as often as i thought he might, so thats a good thing he doesnt always try for the homerun-- just takes what they give him
overall the team didnt seem to have a very good OL or a really good WR for him to throw to. between lackluster overall talent what seemed below average coaching, might be tough to return to the playoffs like they did last year
too many times everyone would just stand around and watch shep try to make something happen. it worked a few times, but not enough to win
in conclusion, i did not see a college caliber QB on the field tonight. arm strength was maybe above average, but rarely ever threw midrange passes-- either outs or streaks. sadly, was not too impressed overall

I did talk with a couple people, Shep may not be 100%, flu like symptoms, is the word I was getting.
TnT, Shep may have done better with the OC from Cy-Creek.
Not putting it all on the OC, the DC could have picked his blitz times a little better. A little more pressure on the C-C Qb.

Second time I've read this. Seems like he gets no help from his O-line/WRs much. And from what you describe of it, does sound like a very simple offense...
Bets on Rivals drops him down at the end of the season? I kid![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

The first Int was with 2:36 left in the game.

Some were saying the same thing in the first half of the Auburn game with Jarrett Lee.

Shep's still a high school player so he has plenty of time to develop into a collge caliber QB. He has too much talent not to.

The coaching at C-R and LSU are light years apart.
Also the players around him.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconthumbup.gif)

Well the good news is were not asking Shep to come in and be a savior and be a cross between John Elway and Vince Young. I believe all Crowton is asking him to do is come in and play a Perrilloux/Percy Harvin type role, which he will be great at IMO. He'll definitely have the help on offense where he doesn't have to carry the load, only add another dimension to it.

I think Shep could be incredibly effective at the QB role full time in his later years because of this reason: If you look at a player like Matt Flynn, all Crowton asked through the air was to manage the game, make accurate throws, and get the ball into the hands of our many talented players. And on the ground he gave him many opportunities to make plays. For that reason i don't think Shep is going to have to play the Bret Favre, he will just manage the game through the air and change the game on the ground

Wow you point out that his OL stood and watched him running for his life and his WR's were not any better yet you expect him to throw the ball down the field... to who? reverse the field... with no blocking. I'm sure he did look average, compared to a QB with a decent line and good WR. I don't know how to take what you posted maybe you should clarify with some examples of great QB's with terrible players around him. I mean look at Clausen (Notre Dame), he came the most highly recruited QB in recent memory but he looked like a High School JV QB his first year due to terrible talent surronding him. The truth is its hard to judge talented QB's and RB's in High School because of the talent around them. Thats one reason I think RS and LS look as good as they do to the coaches, if they can make the kinda plays they are making now with so so talent surronding them imagine the kinda plays they will make with LSU talent around them.

Shep will have a ton of time to develop. I imagine he will have a zone read package his first year at LSU anyway. JJ will have developed more and Lee should be a solid QB. Shep will probably be used all over the field to create mismatches with his speed. Believe me, Crowton is licking his chops on adding a dynamic player like RS.

quote:i thought thats what i was saying. most of all b/c of his offense system and secondly b/c of lack of help, he looked average.

quote:to the open receiver. he threw the deep ball about 6 times. completed 2 for TDs of 15 and 65, and missed about 4 times.
yet you expect him to throw the ball down the field... to who?
maybe the defense he played was all world. maybe he did have flu-like symptoms, causing him to play below is ability. maybe his team isnt any good. maybe his whole team had an off night. i dont know all the little factors-- i do know what i saw, and is not what youd expect from a top 5 national recruit.
**cy ridge was ranked about 13 in the city before the game, so that tells me they arent completely awful
