Doesn’t exist. Even the American brands top end bikes are made in Taiwan, etc

Very few bikes made stateside.

Allied makes their gravel/road frames in the States. Sadly, $500 will get you about a 10th of the way toward purchasing just a frame without any components.

Guerilla Gravity and REEB makes frames here, but they're all mountain bikes.

Moots and Lynskey also make them here, but too expensive.

There are various small scale framemakers in the States as well (mostly working with steel frames), but they're also going to be crazy expensive.

That’s what I’m discovering!
Maaaaan $$$

Okay, so modified question (as much as I hate it) - what’s the rec for a bike that meets my criteria minus American made?

Gets you a Walmart or Academy bike. The cheapest road bike with drop handle bars that I can think from a well known bike company is a Giant Contend 3, I think they are like $880.

Maybe in a flat bar, I’m just not that familiar with those. I would check Giant and Canyon for the value buy.

Yeah, bicycles are one of those things that seems like the should be less expensive than what they are. Hell, a top end road bike can cost more than a well known motorcycle.

I bought my husband a Trek several years ago he has never rode. Probably going to have sell on marketplace. I have a trek I ride often and I love it. Good luck in your search!

Agree with Harold. Get a used bike. You can get 3 times the bike for your budget. Most areas have Bike specific Facebook forums as well which will allow you to purchase local used if buying online and sight unseen is a turn off.

The only problem is that the secondary market for bikes is still a little inflated for the COVID cycling boom. I think it will get flooded within the next 6-12 months as more new cyclists get rid of their COVID purchases and the supply chain issues sort out on new bikes.

What planet do you live on?

That's not even possible used.

I did a ton of research for both my road bike and mountain bike. Looked in gravel and enduro bikes.

I got my road bike, Trek USPS, in 2014 off craigslist refurbished from a cycling club.
Bought the mountain bike (Santa Cruz Chameleon) brand new at the beginning of the shutdown. $2k out the door.

Both bikes are made in Asia (China/Taiwan).

I looked into American made but it is basically an American made frame with Chinese components for $5K.

American Made List

Do your research.

As someone just starting to look into bikes, what justifies the high costs?

Market forces, to a degree. People will pay for it. That being said, a proper bike is a pretty amazing machine these days. I’m mainly into mountain bikes, so I can only speak knowledgeably about those, but the suspension, driventrain, brakes, durability and capability of the modern mountain bike is insane. Yes, they’re expensive, but you’re getting the performance of what would have once been an 8k bike for 3k now.

used for a first/trial run bike for sure. and as someone said, this spring is going to be a great time to buy a bike - tons of people bought bikes during covid and are realizing they don't ride them. not sure your location but if you're louisiana or relatively flat, consider a single speed. saves weight and maintenance and should be all you need for getting some time in the saddle

have a steel frame single speed i use as a commuter bike, got it for $100 off craigslist. too lazy to go down and take a pic

got this a year ago - granted a hookup from a friend - for $1000. cannondale scalpel 29. carbon frame, fork and rims, weighs about 24 lbs. my baby
