How is it That ABC.......

....airs a college football game on primetime every Saturday night, but CBS will only air one SEC game at night all year? I mean, is CSI Butte really that popular?

Just because the rabid fan would prefer to stay home and watch college football on a Sat night does not mean the average fan is the same way.
In big media markets like LA and New York do you really think people stay at home to watch college football, they are more willing to catch a game on a Sat afternoon and then do other things on a Sat night.
I know this is a foreign concept down here where there's not much else to do on a Sat night but go to a college football game but its the rest of the country (where the media focuses on) that is different!

The flaw in your logic is that there's something on TV anyway. What is the best draw? What would make someone more likely to stay home and watch - a sitcom/TV drama or a live football game? I would vote for the latter. Also, in sports bars you have network sports - not anything else.

Hey, I go out at least twice a year!
I get your point, though. Give me a good college football matchup on Saturday night, and I'm gonna stay home and watch it most of the time. I even cancelled plans earlier this year, so I could stay home and watch Florida vs. Miami. That's how pathetic I am.
CBS has always had an older viewership, which is probably pretty loyal. As for ABC, maybe they just can't come up w/ anything better.
Still, it pisses me off that the Bama game (and probably the UGA game) won't be played on Saturday night.

I can't speak for New York but you are incorrect about L.A. This city rolls up the sidewalks once it gets dark. Yes, there's nightlife and stuff to do but not what you would expect. Bars close at 2:00 with many of them shoving patrons out the door by 1:40.

Before giving a definitive answer I'd want to have a look at the contracts the various networks have with the NCAA and the various conferences. ABC, of course, is part of the same company as ESPN, and no doubt coordinate their contractual protections. It may well be that CBS' contract with the SEC limits them in the number of primetime games they can air, perhaps because of provisions in the Disney/ABC/ESPN contract that requires such a limit. Don't know, but I'd bet this is generally right.

I've always loved the argument that the reason college football is so popular down here is because there's nothing else to do.
Granted that larger cities have more things to do, but that doesn't mean I would drop college football to go do them. los angeles, you would know better than I. Isn't a large majority of LA's population transplants from other parts of the country? Why would somebody from DesMoines, Iowa cheer for the Trojans? 90% of the people that follow the Tigers around here are Louisianians.

From the point of CBS its a matter of matchups. CBS has one conference to pull from where ABC has PAC-10, Big 12, ACC, etc.

They don't which is why you see a half empty Coliseum or Rose Bowl when USC or UCLA aren't good. With so many people from other places, you see just about every college represented and most could care less about USC or UCLA outside of alums and some native angelinos

I believe you, sir, are correct. ESPN has rights to one night game a week plus another a couple times a year. If CBS always had a night game that would be 2 and sometimes 3 SEC night games on at the same time. The SEC does not want to do this. The SEC wants for a typical week be were you can watch SEC football all day without too much competition with itself. That is why they have contracts for a 12:30pm, 3:30pm, and 7:45pm (EASTERN TIMES) games weekly. Then there are the occasional weeks where things are different (CBS doubleheader and ESPN & ESPN 2 night games).
