Grantland Rice at his old Underwood..

…in the big press box in the sky, feverishly pecking out the headline—“Herman saga comes full circle back to Baton Rouge”
Then the lead: After dashing the hopes of LSU faithful in that before time, when he grabbed the reins of the Texas Longhorns, Tom Herman seemed poised for gridiron greatness.
But Herman’s star quickly fizzled and he
was dumped in Austin’s gutter like a pail of micro brewed IPA, and forgotten. Until LSU’s new coach, the legendary Brian Kelly, reached out with a mighty hand of hope and redemption.
Yes, Herman will ride again as an Offensive Coordinator for the Fighting Tigers. It is a union for the ages, and one that will live in the hearts of Tiger fans forever.
So before I hit send on the story Shuga, just tell me it’s true.

Do you remember the annual Grantland Rice Bowl that was played in BR's Memorial Stadium?

For when the One Great Score comes to mark against your name, He writes not that you won or lost, but how you played the game… Grantland Rice
There are few athletes today that reflect this quote. It is, was, and will always be about integrity.

Why yes I do. When I was 12, my team got to play in the BREC championship in Tiger Stadium before the Grantland Rice Bowl. Delaware played someone. We won the game in a defensive struggle. Sid Crocker announced the game for us. I don't think anyone was in the stands but parents and families. It was awesome. I think I still have the trophy somewhere.

I wonder how many on this board actually know who Grantland Rice and what an "Underwood" was.
My Dad so loved and quoted Grantland Rice....."and when that one great scorer comes to mark against your name, he notes not wh'er you won or lost but how you played the game.!"

My very first college football game was watching the Grantland Rice Bowl. Louisiana Tech and Terry Bradshaw got beaten by some team from Tennessee. I'm sure I still have the program in a box somewhere. I remember the game was in December, but it felt more like June. We sat a few rows behind Governor McKeithen and Ag Commissioner Dave Pierce, who wore his trademark Stetson hat the entire game.
Sportswriter and a typewriter. The latter required very strong fingers.

I got a downvote for that quote. Screw that person. Your dad is someone that I align with.
Sports is about integrity. Money has ruined sports.

I saw my first LSU football game in person less than a year later, December 5, 1970. So in my first two CFB games I saw Terry Bradshaw and Archie Manning; both lost.
