More about the man (sometimes woman though rarely) than the politics. They are drawn to strong, charismatic personalities that vow to fight for them. This can lead to abuse of power due to the lack of established democratic institutions there.

I get your point but amid a conservative wave in latin america it's kind of a tough time to make that argument
