Like Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones level antique.

He bought them from someone in Japan, they were in incredible condition, clearly the guys who refurbished them did a 10/10 job. He told me they “weren’t cheap”. They are his only set of golf clubs, they are the ones he plays with all the time. He also walked and carried his bag over his shoulder, old refurbished bag to go with the clubs. He was playing regular golf balls.

Here’s the thing, he SUCKED, like awful, and not because of the clubs, looked like he hadn’t played 4 rounds of golf in his life, I’d be shocked if he broke 125, it was like he didn’t know how to actually swing.

It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen, the guy was somehow a hardcore ultra traditionalist and also didn’t seem to know the first thing about golf, all at the same time

No doubt man, more power to him.

It was just a weird thing to see a guy in his twenties, intentionally playing old timey clubs, who also didn’t really seem to be that passionate of a golfer.

That’s actually really cool.

One of my buddies isn’t great at golf either and doesn’t care enough to replace his persimmon woods and old, thin irons from the Nixon administration. I think he got them all at a pawn shop before a bachelor’s trip many years ago.

They’re in ok shape for the age and fun to look at but man they are impossible to hit.

There are still many “hickory shaft” tournaments.

I know a guy who is actually close to scratch. He’s part of a group that plays old equipment at old courses. They evidently have a great time. This man breaks 75 routinely.

They’ve played many of the Donald Ross courses. I think they play from the original tournament yardages.

See this makes more sense to me though. Seemed like the guy I played with spent some serious money on these clubs, and he’s a young guy not a guy who bought them decades ago and kept them.

Again to each their own, and it’s kind of cool, it was just strange

I’ll play with anyone, anytime, anywhere and with any skill level and equipment, just play FAST!

I’d love to play in the wooden club tournament. I have a few random wood shaft clubs and very early steel shaft clubs that i hit with. Great to see how the game has evolved.

A 1965 pro level 6 iron is basically a modern 8 iron in loft and length.

This is what a lot of hardcore golf course architecture sickos do. I love GCA but haven’t gotten that far down the rabbit hole. I have kind of been thinking about starting a set of stuff from the 90s though just to do something fun and play it up a little

TBH I would rather have hipsters get into golf rather than having more barstool/fore play golf bros.

I agree. I would think they would respect the course, rules, and etiquette more so than what I’ve seen in last five years.
